Sergio Bertoni (born September 23, 1915 in Pisa , † February 15, 1995 in La Spezia ) was an Italian football player and coach .
Career
Sergio Bertoni began his career in his hometown at Pisa Calcio , where he worked until 1938, first in 1932 in the Divisione Prima and later in the Serie B , played. In 1936 he took part with the Italian national team at the Summer Olympics in Berlin . Bertoni was able to win the gold medal there after beating Austria 2-1 in the final . Two years later, Sergio Bertoni was after he had scored 22 goals for Pisa in 30 Serie B games in the 1937/38 season , also at the World Cup in France in the Italian squad . Although he did not play a single game in this tournament, he was able to celebrate winning the World Cup with the team trained by Vittorio Pozzo .
After the World Cup victory, Sergio Bertoni, now regarded as one of the greatest talents in Italian football and a possible successor to Giuseppe Meazza , moved to CFC Genoa . Before the start of the 1938/39 season , however, he broke his tibia and fibula and therefore only played one game in his first Serie A season. The injury meant a kink in Bertoni's career, from which he never fully recovered. Although he played for Genoa in Serie A until 1943 and 1945/46 and also played the 1944 war championship with the Grifoni , he scored only a few goals, also because he was used in many different positions.
In 1946 Bertoni moved to Brescia Calcio , and a year later to Modena FC . In the 1949/50 season he finally ended his career at Spezia Calcio in Serie B. He then worked as a coach in La Spezia in 1950/51, 1955 to 1957 and 1961/62 .
Although he only played six internationals for Italy, Sergio Bertoni, along with Alfredo Foni , Ugo Locatelli and Pietro Rava, is one of only four Italians who have become world and Olympic champions in their careers.
