District

Belait

Seria or Pekan Seria (Eng. City Seria) is a city and an administrative district ( Mukim ) in the district ( Daerah ) Belait of the Sultanate of Brunei .

history

Seria was originally called Padang Berawa in Malay , in German: wild pigeon field. The current name 'Seria' apparently originated from the acronym that the British authorities used for the area that was officially known as the South East Reserved Industrial Area . The industrial area is near where oil was first discovered in 1926.

The first commercial oil well was drilled in 1929 in Padang Berawa on the west bank of the Seria River (Sungai Seria). The Seria Field is the largest oil field in northwestern Borneo .

Seria was designated a city in 1936. The city was placed under the supervision of the Kuala Belait Sanitary Board , which was also responsible for the urban area of Kuala Belait.

During World War II , Seria was the first target of the Japanese who landed with part of the Kawaguchi Detachment on December 16, 1941 at 4:40 a.m., nine days after Pearl Harbor in Borneo. They encountered a devastated oil field due to "Operation Denial" carried out by the employees of the British Malayan Petroleum Company (now: Brunei Shell Petroleum ) and soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of the 15th Punjab Regiment , as well as British Army Royal Engineers . However, the invaders continued drilling for oil and the restoration of the production facilities began immediately under Sato , the chief engineer. Over the next three years, the Japanese brought production almost back to pre-war levels and activities accelerated as other sources of supplies for the Japanese war machine were lost. In the last six months of the war, most of the Japanese oil came from Seria. In operation "Ha-Go 2", the Japanese again sabotaged the conveyor systems. The operation began on June 10, 1945, the day Australian forces landed in Muara. The fires could be seen 100 km away at sea. When the 9th Division of the Australians arrived in Seria on June 29, 1945 as part of Operation Oboe Six , the situation was chaotic. 38 oil wells burned, buildings and facilities were destroyed. On August 17, 1945, however, when American fire specialists (Patton and son) arrived, 26 of the fires had already been extinguished by employees of the oil field, supported by a delegation from the Australian Royal Engineers . Production was restored in November, although the oil still had to be stored in makeshift tanks, and oil exports to Lutong began on December 11, 1945.

Some remains of a wooden Seria to Badas railroad built by the British Malayan Oil Company (now Brunei Shell Petroleum) can still be seen. The railroad enabled the water supply in Seria through the Badas Pumping Station on Sungai Belait. BMP employees hid important components of the railway from the Japanese during World War II, and the railway was not put back into operation until after the war.

The pumping station was operated by George William Percival Clark . He was also President of the Shell Recreation Club in Seria (1951). Two of his daughters, Patsy and Gracie, drowned in a boat accident on the Badas River in 1951.

In Seria there was also a small rebellion against the monarchy. An uprising broke out on December 8, 1962, but was quickly crushed by the British Army . The uprising became known as the Brunei Revolt .

The city flourished under the rule of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin . The commercial buildings along Jalan Sultan Omar Ali Street are evidence of this .

geography

Mukim Seria

The district covers 169 km² and is located in the northwest of the Belait district. It borders the South China Sea in the north, Mukim Liang in the east, Mukim Labi in the southeast, Mukim Kuala Balai in the south and Mukim Kuala Belait in the west. The district is home to more than 27,000 people from a wide variety of ethnic groups , including Malays , Chinese and a minority of Gurkha who were members of the British Army brigade . The British Army has had two camps in Seria since 1960. These are Medicina Lines and Tuker Lines .

Since March 2007 the Penghulu (head) of the Mukim Seria was Awang Haji Jamail Linap . The most important river in the area is the Belait River (Sungai Belait).

City of Seria

The urban center was created on the drawing board. The street grid is bounded by the Jalan Tengah and the Seria Arena in the north, by the Jalan Lorong Satu Barat in the east, the Jalan Bolkiah in the south and the Jalan Lorong Tiga Barat in the west. This area covers 0.603 km²

The suburbs of Panaga are to the west of the center and Kampong Baru to the east .

The administrative center of Kuala Belait is about 16 km to the west and the capital Bandar Seri Begawan is about 100 km away. It lies in a north-easterly direction.

Kampung

Unlike other mukim, pekan seria is not administratively divided into kampung. Nevertheless, the neighboring Kampung serve as suburbs of Seria.

  • Panaga (also: Kampung Panaga) is located between the cities of Kuala Belait and Seria. The area is divided into smaller settlements:
    • Jalan Utara with the headquarters of Brunei Shell Petroleum and the popular Panaga Club and Brunei Shell Recreation Club (BSRC) . Numerous foreigners live in this area.
    • Canadian Houses Area along the Jalan Tengah. This area has a special character as the Shell Housing Facilities were built in the style of Canadian log houses. The wood for these buildings was also imported from Canada.
    • Most of the people living around the Panaga Police Station and the Sekolah Rendah Panaga (Panaga Primary School) are Malays. It is called "Kampung Panaga" in a narrower sense.
    • Barracks to the west of the city center.
    • North and West of Seria. The area is home to numerous British Army and Brunei Shell facilities, as well as residential buildings for soldiers and employees.
  • Kampung Baru is to the east of Seria on the left bank of the Sungai Bera . Mainly Chinese and Iban live in this area . The old wooden railway line, which was built by the Japanese to Badas , also runs there.
  • Kampung Lorong Tiga Selatan is a newly built neighborhood with social housing from the government program for the landless near the Seria Bypass .
  • Kampung Perpindahan Baru is another social housing area.
  • Sungai Bera is an industrial area in the north of Kampong Baru and in the northeast of the city center. This is where Brunei's only oil refinery is located .
  • Kampung Perakong
  • Kampung Jabang (also: Kampong Setinggan).
  • Anduki is a sparsely populated area between Seria and Lumut . There is the Anduki airfield and the Anduki Recreation Area .

The AnNaem Islamic Cemetery is also located in Anduki . It stretches over 8 acres and is divided into 25 blocks.

In the Badas area there is the Kampong Badas and the Badas Water Treatment Plant , which is a water treatment plant that supplies the water from the Belait River to the surrounding towns and villages.

traffic

Most of the roads are paved, and there is often a lack of adequate drainage when it rains. The local center for trade and commerce is concentrated around Jalan Sultan Omar Ali Street .

Seria is connected by roads to the west through Panaga with Mumong and Kuala Belait and to the east through Sungai Bera and Anduki with Lumut , Labi and Bandar Seri Begawan and to the south to the Seria Bypass. This main artery from the Malaysian border to Kuala Belait runs south of the urban center. There are several bus services to and from a bus station at the intersection of Jalan Sultan Omar Ali and Jalan Bunga Pinang Streets. The buses run to Kuala Belait and Bandar Seri Begawan, and irregularly to Sungai Liang .

aviation

There is an Anduki Airfield , which mainly serves flights to the Brunei Shell's offshore facilities. The nearest public airports are in Bandar Seri Begawan or Miri ( Malaysia ). There are also a number of helicopter landing pads, including at the Panaga Health Center and the Brunei Shell Petroleum headquarters.

oil and gas

Seria is the center of the oil industry in Brunei with the first commercial inland oil field discovered in Brunei. The city is located in the middle of the Seria Field , where oil has been continuously produced since 1929. Numerous deep pumps (nodding donkeys) shape the landscape.

Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Company Limited is headquartered in Panaga and has numerous oil and gas facilities in Seria. The Seria Refinery at Sungai Bera is the only oil refinery in Brunei, close to the Seria Crude Oil Terminal (SCOT) , the New Gas Compression Plant (NGCP) and the New Industrial Area (NIA) . An open oil water separation plant at the Sungai Bera Holding Basin has been closed due to environmental damage.

Energy generation

A natural gas power plant for generating electricity was dismantled and replaced by a solar system (output: 1,344 MWh.), Which is the only system for renewable energies in Brunei to date . However, the energy consumption on site is higher and electricity from the Lumut Power Plant is also required.

Attractions

Sport and recreation

Sports and leisure activities are mainly limited to the Panaga Club and Brunei Shell Recreation Club country clubs . The Panaga Club has an 18-hole golf course and the Brunei Shell Recreation Club has a riding arena.

Fishing and windsurfing is possible at Jubilee Recreation Park ( Taman Rekreasi Jubli ) in Anduki. The park was established in 1992 by Brunei Shell Petroleum and opened by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on the silver jubilee of the throne.
