Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is an upcoming US action film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is due to hit US cinemas on May 7, 2021. It will be the 26th feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

In December 2018 it was reported for the first time that a film about the Asian hero Shang-Chi was in development , to be written by Dave Callaham , and that Marvel was looking for a suitable director with Asian roots. In the comics, Shang-Chi was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin in 1973 , has mastered several fighting techniques and at times joins the Avengers after turning his back on his criminal father. In March 2019, Destin Daniel Cretton could be engaged for directing. A little later, Kevin Feige confirmed that the film would be part of phase four of the MCU and "very different and special". In July 2019, first Kym Barrett was hired as a costume designer and later Bill Pope as a cameraman. Cretton justified the commitment of Pope with the fact that the cameraman had a "beautiful style" that was both naturalistic and down-to-earth, but at the same time sharpened. At the San Diego Comic-Con 2019, in addition to the original title Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , the release date in February 2021 was revealed. Feige also stated that Simu Liu , who had only been cast two weeks earlier and then completed the first screen tests, will play the main character that gives the title. Tony Leung Chiu Wai is said to be seen as a Mandarin whose impersonator was already played by Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3 . Awkwafina was introduced as another cast member . In addition, the eponymous terrorist organization Ten Rings is said to play an important role in the film after shorter appearances, mentions and allusions in Iron Man , Iron Man 2 , Iron Man 3 and Ant-Man . The cast of the title hero with Liu met with criticism, especially in China, where they are disappointed that they have not hired a real Chinese and that Liu looks like a “cliché Asian” who is not even good-looking by Chinese standards. Cretton, on the other hand, said it made him proud to see that superheroes were slowly reflecting the diversity of the real world and that his film , along with Black Panther , continued to do so . It was later reported that Jackie Chan was in negotiations about the role of Zheng Zu , Shang-Chi 's father . In January 2020, Rosalind Chao and Michelle Yeoh's engagements became known. In April of the same year, comedian Ronny Chieng's involvement in the film became public.
Filming began in early March 2020 at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney under the working title Steamboat . However, in the middle of the month the filming was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Filming is scheduled to resume in Australia at the end of July 2020 and will later continue in Los Angeles , among other places . Recordings are also to be made in San Francisco . You should also think about filming some scenes in Hong Kong and Vietnam . Nat Sanders and Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir were hired as film editors . After Short Term 12 - Silent Heroes , Glass Castle and Just Mercy , Sanders is working with director Destin Daniel Cretton for the fourth time.
The film was originally scheduled to hit German cinemas on February 11, 2021 and the US cinemas the following day. In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and the postponement of The Eternals to the February start date, the film is now set to hit German cinemas on April 29, 2021 and US cinemas on May 6.
