The Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU ) is a franchise and fictional universe that sets a series of superhero films that were independently produced by Marvel Studios and are based on characters from the Marvel Comics , but at the same time are independent of the comic universe. The franchise extends beyond the actual feature films; it also includes short films , tie-in comic books, television series, and web series . In addition, compilation albums with the music contained in the films and series are published. Like the original Marvel comic universe , the MCU's releases combine basic plot elements, plot locations, cast, and characters.

The universe is divided into four phases so far. The first film in the MCU was Iron Man (2008), which started the first phase. This was completed in 2012 with Marvel's The Avengers , before the second phase began with Iron Man 3 (2013). This includes six films and was completed in July 2015 with Ant-Man . The third phase began in 2016 with The First Avenger: Civil War , which comprises a total of eleven films and ended in 2019 with Spider-Man: Far From Home . In 2011, The Consultant, the first short film in the universe, was published. In September 2013, the MCU saw an expansion into television with the ABC series Marvel's Agents of SHIELD . In 2015, ABC followed Marvel's Agent Carter and the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil and Marvel's Jessica Jones . In 2016, Marvel's Luke Cage also appeared on Netflix, followed by the ABC web series Marvel's Agents of SHIELD: Slingshot . In 2017, the Netflix series Marvel's Iron Fist , Marvel's The Defenders , Marvel's The Punisher and the ABC series Marvel's Inhumans as well as the Hulu series Marvel's Runaways and in 2018 the Freeform series Marvel's Cloak & Dagger appeared . These series were produced by Marvel Television . Phase four will herald in the film Black Widow in 2020 and end in 2022 with Thor: Love and Thunder . In addition, the fourth phase includes for the first time various series produced by Marvel Studios for Disney + , starting with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2020).

The films in the MCU received mostly positive reviews and were successful at box offices around the world. The franchise is the most successful film series in cinema history with total box office income of over 22.5 billion US dollars (as of November 24, 2019) .

Emergence

Over the decades, Marvel had given the film rights for its comic book heroes to various Hollywood studios. As usual with comic or book adaptations, the publisher only received license fees for these films. As long as the films had mediocre box office success, there was nothing wrong with that from Marvel's point of view. However, some film projects had failed in the 1990s, for example concepts for Thor, Captain America and Iron Man migrated from studio to studio. After the great success of 20th Century Fox 's X-Men film series (from 2000) and Sony's Spider-Man (2002), Marvel decided on a new strategy for future comic adaptations. The publisher wanted to produce its own feature films in the future. So you can keep creative control and at the same time take all the profit for yourself. Because the new "hit films" made little money. As Lehman Brothers calculated, Marvel received $ 62 million from the $ 2.5 billion profit from the first three Spider-Man films.

Kevin Feige - President of Marvel Studios

In the spring of 2005, Marvel announced for the first time that it would produce films through its subsidiary Marvel Studios . Paramount Pictures will act as distribution partner and Marvel took out a loan of US $ 525 million from Merrill Lynch to finance this project . The first project was to be Captain America . Between November 2005 and April 2006, the rights to Iron Man, Hulk and Thor also reverted to Marvel. In April 2006, Ant-Man was also confirmed as a planned production. For this reason, some of the lesser-known projects originally announced (Shang-Chi, Power Pack) were not pursued any further. In addition, efforts were focused on the original Avengers members and the idea of a common film universe was brought up for the first time. First of all, solo films of the heroes should be published in order to finally bring them together in a crossover.

Film series

So far, 23 films in the series have been released. In addition, some comics have been published about the movie universe, which the plot of other characters, e. B. the Black Widow, show alongside the films and are also considered an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe . The movie universe is also divided into phases, with the first phase consisting of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel's The Avengers . It is particularly shaped by the idea of the heroes and clarifies their history and the formation of the Avengers.

Phase 2 consists of Iron Man 3, Thor - The Dark Kingdom, The Return of the First Avenger, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man . She develops the existing characters further, for example by pointing out various problems related to their actions, and introducing new ones.

The third phase began with The First Avenger: Civil War and also consists of Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Decision Day, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home .

It is already known that after the third phase a third part of the Guardians of the Galaxy and a sequel to Black Panther will appear. A film with the Marvel heroine Natasha Romanoff alias Black Widow and a sequel to Doctor Strange will also be released. In September 2018 it was also announced that a film about the Eternals , also known as "Homo Immortalis", is planned. The Asian hero Shang-Chi is also to receive his own film. At the San Diego Comic-Con International 2019, the plans for the fourth phase were first introduced in the Black Widow, the Eternals, Shang-Chi and sequels to Doctor Strange , Thor: Day of Decision and Far From Home: Spider-Man included are. In addition, series that are officially part of the fourth phase and have heroes of the film series as protagonists will be produced for the first time by Marvel Studios itself, instead of Marvel Television.

In March 2019, producer Kevin Feige revealed that the first 22 films or the first three phases together will be called The Infinity Saga . In April 2019 it was announced that the third phase would not end with Avengers: Endgame , but with Spider-Man: Far From Home and thus after eleven instead of ten films. Even before Far From Home hit theaters, Feige confirmed that the film would be counted as part of the saga.

Series

Jeph Loeb - President of Marvel Television

For many years, all series from the MCU were only produced by Marvel Television , some in collaboration with other production companies, until it was announced in 2018 that Marvel Studios would produce certain new series themselves (for Disney +).

Marvel Television

Since 2013, the US broadcaster ABC has been producing a TV series about the organization SHIELD under the title Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, set in the same fictional universe . The first season was broadcast from September 2013 to May 2014. The first season plays after Marvel's The Avengers and parallel to the events in phase 2. The second season, which aired from September 2014 to May 2015, is about the Rebuilding SHIELD, also referring to the events in Avengers: Age of Ultron . In addition, the Inhumans are established in the universe. Season three aired from September 2015 to May 2016, season four from September 2016 to May 2017, and season five from December 2017 to May 2018. With the end of season 7, the series was discontinued in 2020.

In January 2015, ABC began broadcasting Marvel's Agent Carter , which had its series finale in March 2016. Set a year after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger , it is about the beginnings of SHIELD after World War II.

The series Marvel's Inhumans was broadcast on ABC from September to November 2017 , but canceled after only one season due to poor reviews and ratings.

In addition, there are a total of five series on the video-on-demand provider Netflix , the first four of which include the heroes Daredevil , Jessica Jones , Luke Cage and Iron Fist , which run together to the series Marvel's The Defenders , where they then as a joint Team act. The first season of Marvel's Daredevil was released in April 2015 and the second season in March 2016. In November 2015 the first season of Marvel's Jessica Jones followed , in September 2016 the first season of Marvel's Luke Cage . In July 2016, Netflix announced with Marvel's The Punisher , a sixth-alone miniseries about the vigilante verübenden Frank Castle on. As in the second season of Marvel's Daredevil, Jon Bernthal will play the main role of the title giver. Marvel's Iron Fist launched in March 2017, Marvel's The Defenders in August 2017, and Marvel's The Punisher in November 2017. At the beginning of 2018, Marvel announced that there would be no new series produced by Netflix, these will be published in the future in Disney's own productions via an in-house streaming service. Seasons that were already in production were then completed, but the last series was finally discontinued in June 2019.

The series Marvel's Runaways ran on Hulu from November 2017 . From 2020 a series about the Ghost Rider alias Robbie Reyes , known from Marvel's Agents of SHIELD , should be released, who should be played again by Gabriel Luna . At the end of September 2019 it was announced that the series had been canceled before shooting started. In 2020 a series about Daimon and Ana Helstrom , the children of a serial killer, will start. Both series should have been marketed under the parent title Adventure into Fear .

From June 2018, Freeform broadcast the series Marvel's Cloak & Dagger , which led to a crossover with the Hulu series Marvel's Runaways from the third season starting in December 2019 .

In August 2019, Jeph Loeb announced that series produced by Marvel Television would also appear on Disney + in the future .

For the respective mini-series, which are to be more closely linked to the films from the MCU than the previous series from Netflix or Hulu, the plan is even to employ the main actors of the respective films. The series should be between six and eight episodes, and the budget should be between 100 and 150 million US dollars per series. Just a month later it became known that a joint mini-series by Falcon and the Winter Soldier would also be created for the same streaming service . Later, a series about Hawkeye was also confirmed, in which this is to hand over the scepter to Kate Bishop. Furthermore, with What If the first animated series is to start, which will, however, tell alternative stories of the MCU heroes. The series were announced by Kevin Feige as part of the fourth phase and also have a significant impact on the films. chronology

While there is an official timeline of events for the first phase, some contradicting information is given for later phases. Kevin Feige said in an interview that while they have a plan, they adapt it to the stories of the films. According to him, there is no detailed plan outlining the specifications of each film. In October 2017, Kevin Feige announced that at some point they would publish a timeline to clarify the situation. In April 2019, directors Joe and Anthony Russo began to list the previous MCU films in chronological order in the days before their film Avengers: Endgame was released . In Avengers: Endgame , official dates were displayed for various MCU plot elements: Marvel's The Avengers is set in 2012, Thor - The Dark Kingdom 2013, Guardians of the Galaxy 2014, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame 2018, with Endgame also in the year 2023 plays.

useful information

  • The chronologically correct order of the MCU is not the same as the order of the release of the respective films. For example, the film Captain Marvel takes place after Captain America: The First Avenger and before the first part of Iron Man .
  • The creator of many of the characters, Stan Lee , made a cameo in the first 22 films but not in the one-shots . He also appears in the series Marvel's Agents of SHIELD , Marvel's Agent Carter and Marvel's Runaways , although in the Netflix series he can only be seen in a photo in the background, disguised as a police officer.
    • In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 it is revealed that he is documenting universally relevant events on earth on behalf of the powerful alien species of the Watchers , which allows him to appear in different epochs. However, the cameo is primarily for entertainment purposes and not of great significance.
  • Since Kevin Feige is a big fan of Star Wars , a reference to The Empire Strikes Back , the second part of the Star Wars original trilogy, was hidden in all six films of "Phase Two" . A film character loses a hand or an arm , like Luke Skywalker once did , like Aldrich Killian in Iron Man 3 , Thor in Thor - The Dark Kingdom , Bucky Barnes in The Return of the First Avenger , Groot and Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy , Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Darren Cross in Ant-Man , and Phil Coulson in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD
  • Due to the great success of the MCU, the Marvel competitor DC Comics has started to build its own film universe .
  • In the late 1990s, the Sony film studio was given the opportunity by Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter to found their own film universe and buy the film rights of all Marvel heroes for $ 25 million; but turned down this offer. Sony was of the opinion that no one wanted to see the Marvel heroes and only secured the rights to Spider-Man .
    • In spring 2015, Disney , Sony and Marvel Studios were able to agree on a deal in which they shared the film rights and were thus allowed to produce five films for the MCU with an appearance by Spider-Man: The First Avenger: Civil War , Spider-Man: Homecoming , Avengers: Infinity War , Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home . After they could not agree on a continuation of the collaboration in 2019 after the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home , the rights went back in full to Sony, which is why Spider-Man's appearance in the MCU was only a new one Agreement would be possible. This was achieved at the end of September 2019 and includes Spider-Man getting a third solo film and being allowed to appear in another MCU film. Meanwhile, Sony began its own film universe with Venom in October 2018 , known as the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) and based on several characters from the Spider-Man comics. Some of the films it contains will have references to the MCU, but the MCU will not refer to the Sony films.
  • The following MCU films are represented in the IMDb Top 250 Charts: Avengers: Infinity War at number 60, Avengers: Endgame at number 68, and Guardians of the Galaxy at number 248 (as of March 22, 2020)
