Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy ( Urdu شرمین عبید چنائے; Born November 12, 1978 in Karachi ) is a Pakistani documentary filmmaker and journalist . She has won several international film prizes for her work , including two Oscars and two Emmys . Obaid-Chinoy was the first person from Pakistan to receive an Oscar. In 2012 she also received the highest civilian award in her country, Hilal-i-Imtiaz , for her work, and in the same year she was among the Time 100 .

biography

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was born in Karachi and attended the Karachi Grammar School there . One of her classmates there was Kumail Nanjiani . She later moved to the United States and attended Smith College , where she received a Bachelor of Arts . This was followed by two master’s degrees from Stanford University , one in communication and one in international politics . She is married and has a daughter, her motivation for filmmaking lies in her family:

"I want the Pakistan that she inherits to be better than the one we currently live in."

"I want the Pakistan she [the daughter] inherits to be better than the one we currently live in."
