Shiml (born November 5, 1984 in Bremen ; bourgeois Jan Viohl ) is a German rapper and producer who began his career with the Selfmade Records label .

biography

Viohl, who comes from the Bremen district of Vahr , received a microphone and a sampler from his parents at the age of fourteen. He then began to record his own hip-hop pieces under the pseudonym Shiml. At the beginning of his musical career in 1999 the rapper belonged together with Moe Zech to the formation Team Bremen Ost, with which he mainly recorded pieces that can be assigned to the style of the battle rap . After a short time, Viohl decided to continue recording music on his own. Since he had no contact with hip-hop producers, Shiml began to produce music himself, which he rapped his lyrics about. Also the subsequent mixing The Bremen resident took on the title himself. Viohl, who claims to be no fan of rap music, cites the reason for the decision to produce hip-hop titles himself: “The main attraction was aggression, frustration or other feelings to pack in a completely different, new way. "

Shiml's first publication is In the Center of the Earth, which was offered free of charge on the Internet. According to the rapper, the album should have been downloaded 50,000 times within a week. In 2005 Shiml released the album Nach uns der Rest, which was produced by Mix Chris, together with MontanaMax . In addition, the best-of album by Team Bremen Ost was released in the same year, on which exclusive contributions by Shiml are represented. MontanaMax sent copies of the album Nach uns der Rest to various labels, so that Slick One, the founder of the independent label Selfmade Records, could hear songs by Shiml. Slick One finally met with the Bremer and offered him a contract. At the end of 2005 he had his first record deal with Selfmade Records .

After Shiml had done his community service, his first solo album Hinterm Horizont was released on February 24, 2006 . Many of the tracks on the album were written before the contract was signed. The rapper therefore decided to revise the pieces before the release of Hinterm Horizont , so that music from the producers Mix Chris, Rizbo and Flipstar were added to the album. MontanaMax, Pxxpmatz, Flipstar and Slick One have guest posts on Shiml's debut album. Subsequently, Shiml's contributions appeared on the albums of other rappers, so that he can be heard on Boss der Bosses from Kollegah and only child from MontanaMax. He also performed around two concerts a week over a period of six months. After the release of his debut album, Jan Viohl began training and studying in the field of advertising and communication, which he completed in May 2009.

In 2006 Shiml took part in the hip-hop battles for the DVD production Feuer über Deutschland . According to his own statement, he had forgotten the text that was written down and provided for it, so that he had to improvise against Pillath . His appearance was rated as unsuccessful. On July 6, 2007, Chronik 1 , the label sampler from Selfmade Records, was released, focusing on Shiml, Favorite , Slick One and Kollegah. Shiml was involved in six tracks during the creation of the album. A video was created for the section on the way up, which was recorded jointly by all of the label's artists, and was broadcast on the music channels. In 2008 Shiml appeared primarily with guest posts on albums of befriended rappers. He was represented with Faustkampf on the album Anarcho des Rappers Favorite, Omuzlarimda Yük on Rapstradamus by Turgay K and with Correspondence on Maximilian from MontanaMax.

On January 30, 2009, Shiml's second solo album was released under the title Im Alone via Selfmade Records . A video for the piece Can you see him had already been made beforehand , which was also broadcast on the music channel MTV . Shiml entered the charts for the first time with In Solo . As part of the publication of Chronik 2 , the Bremen native made it onto the cover of the hip-hop magazine Backspin for the first time .

Shiml announced on October 1st that he had parted ways with Selfmade Records . As a reason, the man from Bremen stated that he had to reorient himself professionally after completing his studies. Therefore it is currently not possible for him to “devote himself to music professionally”. Even so, he still wants to record songs. In 2010 Shiml recorded the album Generation Null together with MontanaMax . Despite the termination of the contract, the label Selfmade Records could be won for the publication . The album was released on November 26, 2010.

In 2018 his album Agora was released by Universal Music .

In 2019 he was with Montana Max and Joka on the 120 years Werder sampler with the song "My Heart Beats" and was particularly successful with the video.

In 2020 he released the song "Immer So" (Alktagsgeschichten) together with Moe Zech and DJ Cold Cut, which was hailed by fans as the best Shiml song for over 10 years.

Musical style

Shiml's songs are stylistically different. Much of the pieces are characterized by melancholy . The texts of the titles are often personal and are influenced by the problems and everyday life of the person Jan Viohl. Shiml, who also produces the music of his songs himself, puts melancholy melodies under his lyrics, which create a dark to sad atmosphere. Despite the influence of Viohl's life on the music, the rapper states that not all facets of his character are reflected in the pieces: “I don't think you can say that you recognize my whole personality in my music. Rather, I pack certain emotions in the music, but I also like to entertain people. "

Another style used by Shiml is battle rap , in which the performing artist presents himself as particularly positive and superior to others and attacks fictional opponents. The rapper often uses metaphors and similes for the texts of these titles . In his presentation, Shiml uses the technique of "double times", which is characterized by high speed.
