Boss der Bosse is the second mixtape by German rapper Kollegah . It was released on June 9, 2006 on the independent label Selfmade Records . Boss der Bosse was largely produced by hip-hop musician Rizbo and is considered the second part of the pimp tape series.

Emergence

Logo of the rapper

After Kollegah recorded the pimp tape in 2005 and published it on his website, the rapper's contract with Selfmade Records was announced in early December 2005 . At that point in time the first sound carrier had already been downloaded 30,000 times from the Internet. The pimp tape was first released as an X-Mas edition on December 30, 2005 via Selfmade Records . After that, Kollegah began working on the mixtape Boss der Bosse , which is also known as a "street album" due to the exclusivity of the beats. The work on Boss der Bosse was more intensive and, according to the rapper, the lyrics are more well thought-out. In addition, an increased focus was placed on production during the creation. While Kollegah wrote the texts for the pimp tape within two weeks, the paperwork for the second part took a total of three months.

Due to the media hype that arose as part of the publication of Boss der Bosse , Kollegah was decided to participate in Splash! invited to the Mzee stage. The rapper had to cancel his performance at the festival after a few minutes. Numerous hip-hop fans made fun of Kollegah's first concert appearance in Internet forums.

Personal songs

Boss der Bosse contains not only the typical Kollegah battle rap pieces, but also some personal songs. The pieces of music smoke and especially summer can be highlighted here. Kollegah and Slick One report on their past in Rauch . In doing so, Kollegah self-critically reflects on his own behavior (" But why did I always squander quick money on whores and cars instead of buying flowers for my mother? ") And thanks his mother and sister for their loyalty (" That is for my sister, my little sister, who hid her brother's money in her closet in case the cops come. ")

The piece Sommer serves to portray the rapper's remorse about how he shaped his life before his music career. In the second verse, Kollegah mainly deals with his work as a drug dealer. In the chorus he then shows that despite his criminal past he is trying to "get to heaven".

Life is not a gift, it is a test. This gray life is called: How much can a person endure without giving up? And the reason I still live to this day is because I know I would end up in the fire for suicide. And I pray every day so that when the time comes I don't stand before death and say: Please give me another year and I'll make everything right again. Over is over and I have to go to heaven. Because what is 70 years of life compared to eternity? Why money and cars if in the end all that remains is the soul? But why do I make it up to myself, I'll live decently from today, but bring the powder back to the people the next day? Why don't I know what love is What is an intact family? No idea, it doesn't matter, that's life. Such is the predetermined fate, so we don't give up, go on and try: To get to heaven, to fight the devil, until the day I die - and it's summer. "

- Second stanza of the song summer

In an interview with MZEE , Kollegah commented on these atypical personal texts.

It's not like I'm the cold-hearted, heartless pimp from morning to night. Of course, there are also thoughtful moments in life and it was my intention to reflect them. Actually, I was expecting a bit of rejection from the audience, who appreciates me for writing punchline-heavy gee-shit, but I also wanted to bring something from the private person Kollegah into the rap, which was important to me at the time. "

Guest Posts

Kollegah and Slick One

The album contains guest contributions, so-called features , by three different artists. The label colleague Shiml is represented on the track Mobster Music . Kollegah said in an interview about this collaboration: “ I knew his previous albums and was a fan of his music. It is a contrast to my sound, but I think we complement each other very well. “The founder of the Selfmade Records label , Slick One, appears on the song Rauch . The chorus in the piece Image des Pimps is sung by Sarah. Kollegah commented on the failed collaboration with rappers Favorite and Flipstar: “ Favorite was already on my last release, so we thought I'd rather do something for his upcoming album. Flipstar is currently rather inactive anyway. "

production

Six musicians are responsible for the beats of the album. The main producer of Boss the Bosses is Rizbo. He controlled the beats for the pieces of music Showtime Again , Time is money , Mobster Music , At sunset , you cry tears , smoke , what are you watching? and image of the pimp . Three more beats were produced by Chrizmatic. These can be assigned to the songs Intro , König Westdeutschlands and Ich gab keine Fick . Maxito Flow produced the play Boss der Bosse . Akasha also contributed a beat. This was used for the song Sommer . The beats for the music pieces Nacht and Outro were produced by Paul Supreme. Six June, who also produced a beat for Kollegah's subsequent album Alphagene , provided the background music for the songs King of coke and Fick dein Fame .

On the cover you can see Kollegah leaning against the bonnet of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class . He is dressed in a black suit and is pulling a cigar, which he is holding with his left hand. The background is completely white and includes the Kollegah logo in the upper left corner.

Use in movies

The two pieces of music Showtime Again and Summer were used in the film Nachtspuren . Both songs run in different scenes that take place in a discotheque. In addition, the song Sommer runs at the end of the film and in the credits. Summer therefore acts as the movie's theme song.

reception

success

Boss der Bosse did not make it into the album charts, but the sound carrier helped to raise the profile of the Friedberger native. With his first solo album Alphagene , released the following year , he managed to place himself at number 51 on the German charts. Boss der Bosse was named Mixtape of the Month by hip-hop magazine Juice .

criticism

Boss of the bosses was positively received by the reviewers. The hip-hop magazine Juice declared the record the mixtape of the month . Above all, the numerous word games, so-called punchlines, are highlighted positively in the evaluation.

“Kollegah just has it, these wicked punchlines. And the best thing about it is that you don't have to wait half a street album for the one killer, but that Toni shoots out his eloquent, nasty and snotty coke tones every second - every line a hit. [...] If you now consider that this CD, which Rizbo is largely undercooled to arrogant, is only intended as a warm-up run for his album, which is hip for the beginning of next year, one can really get scared. Seldom been so well entertained. "

Backspin magazine rated Boss der Bosses with 3.5 out of 5 possible points. In the review, the responsible editor positively emphasizes the well-thought-out texts, the refrains of the songs and Kollegah's double-time flows. Furthermore, negative aspects are also taken up in the assessment.

" Lines like:" When I wasn't rapping over piano beats, I already made more money with speed than Keanu Reeves "only roughly show how entertaining" Boss of the Bosses "is. Some of the hooklines are also very innovative, especially “Time Is Money” and “At Sunset” are outstanding. Even if Kollegah can still make progress in terms of formulation and flow, at least in some places, the only disadvantage of this second part of the pimp tape would be that some unsuspecting listeners might assume that it could be a particular Berliner, because his voice is very that of Kollegah is similar. Kollegah is not necessarily the freshest pseudonym, but you should remember this name and go to the "boss of the bosses" for a big chat. "

The website Allesreal.de also rated Boss der Bosses positively. For example, the “interplay between beat and text” is described as excellent.

The current New Era Cap / White Tea-Raps are now half the map. Toni delivers the counterpart: Boss sweaters, sweaters from Armani, gold rings. Tonistyle. The Tonistyle is more, it can actually be defined as follows: pursue the 'image of the pimp', the best way to do this is by 'not giving a fuck' and making a lot of 'smoke' about yourself. As for women, go 'at sunset' to the point where they end up crying tears. Conclusion: all-round successful tape. The first album followed in 2007. Until then you have to and will have to pass the time with the two tapes. The best refreshment, especially in summer. Laughs guaranteed. "
