background

In June 2009, a joint album by Farid Bang and Kollegah was released under the title Jung, brutal, gutaussehend . With this, the duo positioned themselves at number 30 in the German charts. Although the reaction of the music press to the collaboration project was mixed, the young, brutal, handsome developed among numerous followers of the two rappers to a favorite among the publications Kollegahs and Farid Bangs. This led to the rappers being repeatedly asked about a second part. In an interview with Kollegah in September 2011, the rapper finally announced that a successor to Young, Brutal, Good-Looking was being planned. At the end of March 2012, Farid Bang announced via the social network Facebook that he had signed a contract for Young, Brutal, Handsome 2 . On October 18, 2012, the release of Young, Brutal, Handsome 2 was finally announced for February 8, 2013.

Emergence

The Young, Brutal, Handsome 2 work process took a year. Kollegah and Farid Bang recorded all the pieces on the album with Daniel "Koree" Coros in the Homeboy Studios in Düsseldorf. The melodies of the songs were contributed by a number of hip-hop producers. Thus produced Shuko , Johnny Illstrument, M3, Brisk Fingaz , Abaz, Hookbeats, Cristal, Joshimixu, KD-Beatz, Cubeatz, United Hustlers, Freedo, Chrizmatic and Juh-Dee the pieces of the album. The songs Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2013 and Du liegst were also expanded with the use of live instruments. Lars Erhardt recorded guitar for Jung, Brutal, Gutaussehend in 2013 . The melody for Du liegst was also supplemented with guitar recordings by Hans Ziller. After the recordings, Yunus “Kingsize” Cimen took over the mixing of the music. The final mastering was done by Chris Gehringer of Sterling Sound in New York.

Musical content

From a stylistic point of view, the album is classified into the rap subgenres battle rap and gangsta rap . The album does not contain any musical guest appearances, so all hooklines are sung or rapped by either Kollegah or Farid Bang. Both Kollegah and Farid Bang have several songs Double Time -Parts in which they rap in comparison with the clock at 1.5 times speed (contrary to the wording, which suggests double speed, has a "Double Time Part" compared to Clock only 1.5 times the speed. A "tripletime part" is twice as fast.). Various celebrities - primarily other rappers - are dissed on the album . These include Laas Unltd. , Max Herre , Fler , Sido , Curse , Cro , Kool Savas , Kitty Kat , Das Bo , Ferris MC , MC Rene , Marteria , Miss Platnum , FR , Die Orsons , Rick Ross and Tyga . Occasional particularly drastic lines, which refer to prominent people, among other things, were censored by the rappers or self-made records themselves . These include allusions to Gina-Lisa Lohfink and Charlotte Engelhardt as well as the word rape . In an interview with Spiegel Online , Kollegah commented on the sometimes controversial lyrics on the album as follows: “You have to compare it with the action film genre: To create atmosphere, you have to get it across seriously. Testosterone-pregnant films in which people are butchered, such as " 300 " for example, are hits worldwide. Our rap is just such a form of entertainment. "

Excerpt from the video for "Dynamite"

One day after Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 was announced, a free song called G-Punkt was released by Kollegah, a so-called "freetrack" . On November 28, 2012, the music video for the first digital single Dynamit was released . This was produced by StreetCinema . Malic Bargiel took over the production management and Daniel Zlotin appeared as the director of the video. To give an impression of the shooting, a making-of was published. The second music video Drive-By was released on December 19, 2012. This was implemented by Nazar Films by the Austrian Nazar . The third song, also by Nazar, You know the West was visually implemented. A making-of was also published for this a few days later. With buffalo hump command a fourth music video again from published on January 20, 2013 Nazar film was produced. A snippet followed at the end of January in which excerpts from the songs on the album are presented. Shortly before the album was released, another music video for Dissen was released on principle . On February 11, 2013 Kollegah made another freetrack available for download with Der Fahrkartenkontrollerur. On March 3, 2013, the sixth music video of the album for the song Hallelujah was released. This was created under the direction of Markus and Michael Weicker.

In the run-up to the publication, videos of Farid Bang and Kollegah were also released during visits to different cities. During the marketing of the Hoodtape Volume 1 X-Mas Edition and Bossaura albums by Kollegah, trips were organized. In mid-November 2012 a video was published about a visit by the rappers to Movie Park Germany in Bottrop-Kirchhellen . In this, Kollegah and Farid Bang make sharp remarks against the rapper Fler . A few days after it was published, the video was blocked on the YouTube video portal , which various media have linked to the comments against Fler. In mid-December 2012, recordings of a trip by the rappers to the Latvian capital Riga were released. These appeared in the form of a three-part video series. Another video blog was created during a video shoot in Vienna . For the hip-hop magazine Juice , Kollegah and Farid Bang produced the piece Titan (The Bionx Remix) as a so-called Juice Exclusive! available for the 115th Juice CD.

tour

From April 2 to April 14, 2013 Kollegah and Farid Bang completed a joint tour called the “JBG-2” tour. The multi-city concert series started in Hamburg and ended with a performance in Cologne. An announced second part of the tour, which should take place from November 27 to December 18, 2013, was canceled at the beginning of May. This was justified with the lack of time Kollegah and Farid Bang have to work on their solo projects.

The album entered the album charts in Germany at number 1 with 80,000 units sold in the first week . The album also reached number 1 in the album charts in Austria and Switzerland. Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 is the first number one album for both Kollegah and Farid Bang . Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 is from the release date the German hip-hop album with the highest sales in the release week , the last five years in Germany. In response to the reference to other successful hip-hop releases by Cro , Xavas or Sido , Media Control explained that the delivery of albums to retailers is crucial for the award of gold awards. However, these do not necessarily reflect “actual sales to end users” . In the case of Kollegah and Farid Bang, it is "a matter of direct sales to the customer" . In addition, Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 set a download record as the best-selling hip-hop album to date in the first three days of sales in Germany. In the second week the album fell to number 3, in the third week to number 5 and in the fourth week to number 7 in the German charts. criticism

Reviews of the music media

In a review on the Rap.de website, Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 was rated seven out of a possible ten points. The editor Phil Weichert characterizes the release as a "consistent battle album that does not make any compromises" . Kollegah and Farid Bang attack numerous hip-hop musicians in it. There is "hardly a well-known rapper who is not fucked, dismantled, run over or shot on 'JBG II'" . Already in the first piece of dynamite , the rappers' "undeniable strengths" become clear. These are "creative comparisons" and, especially in the case of Kollegah, "a sovereign rap technique that never gets dirty even with the double-time parts that are often used" . The song Bossmodus is highlighted positively due to Kollegah's presentation style. Weichert also praised the productions of the pieces as “consistently high quality” . The melodies to Dissen from principle and young, brutal, good-looking 2013 , however, seem unsuitable “due to their use of electric guitars” . In contrast, the songs Steroidrap and Ey Yo Pt. 2 positively mentioned. In summary, the listener could accuse Kollegah and Farid Bang of “lack of innovation and monotony in terms of redundancy in terms of content” , but the topics are so “entertainingly implemented that boredom rarely occurs” .

The Laut.de e-zine awarded three out of a possible five points. According to editor Max Brandl, young, brutal, handsome 2 go "a step in the right direction" compared to the first part . The fundamental problem of the album series, however, is "the obvious difference in terms of verbal ability of the two protagonists" . Farid Bang opposed further development. "Flow, voice and oral agility" of the rapper are described as tough. On the other hand, Kollegah is a “much stronger rapper” . He performed "complex double to quadruple rhymes, frenzied double time volleys and tricky puns [...] with [...] smug and sovereign [r] 'wickedness'" . Brandl finds praise for the production of the album. The melodies dynamite , Boss mode and drive-by and the "with plucked lute and organic drums" equipped four elements are highlighted positive. The “driving strings” of the piece Adrenalin and the “Beat Cathedral” for Hallelujah are also praised. In contrast, Brandl characterizes the melodies of the songs Dissen Aus Prinzip , Jung, Brutal, Gutaussehend 2013 and Du Liegst as “total failures” .

The German hip-hop magazine Backspin described Kollegah and Farid Bang as an “extremely well-coordinated team” . In terms of content, "Dissen" is the only mission on young, brutal, good-looking 2 . The fear that Farid Bang could “not keep up with Kollegah in terms of quality” was not confirmed. It seems like Kollegah spurs him on to creative punchlines and good flow” . The productions are praised as varied. In contrast to other reviews, Backspin highlights “Experiments with Vocalsamples and E-Guitars” positively for some melodies. The sung hooklines are called the only flaw .

In a review for Hiphop.de, Erich Unrau awarded seven out of ten points to the second Kollabo album by Kollegah and Bang. In Jung, brutal, handsome 2 it go "politically incorrect, vulgar and uncouth to" . The two rappers meet the listeners' expectations with “punchlines en masse, crazy double-timed runs, flow variations [and] endless rhymes” . On the other hand, the album lacks "statement and variety in content" . Unlike most of the critics, Unrau rates the productions as unbalanced. These are “not necessarily up-to-date” and “reduce the listening pleasure noticeably” .

Comments from news magazines

After Jung, Brutal, Gutaussehend (Young, Brutal, Good Looking 2 ) entered the charts at number 1, not only the music media but also numerous news magazines and their online versions became aware of Kollegah and Farid Bang. Spiegel Online described the publication's chart success as the return of German gangster rap. The two rappers are "commercially linked to the heyday of gangster rappers around the Aggro Berlin label " and thus contradict the "most popular story about German hip-hop that gangster rap is dead."

Aleksandar Jožvaj and Dennis Sand explained in Stern that the commercial success of the album was a "lesson about the triumph against the stereotypical mechanisms of the major label" . Selfmade Records was able to generate a hype about young, brutal, good-looking 2 through “clever marketing strategies and contemporary public relations work” . The high number of video clips is also taken up and the necessity emphasized. By reducing production costs and being able to publish singles in digital form, the performers are “no longer dependent on the rotation of monopolistic music television” . In terms of content, young, brutal, handsome 2 convey a lifestyle ” in addition to the music . Furthermore, the two editors rate the music on the album as "far more complex [...] than the blunt topic at first glance suggests" . Kollegah is “currently probably the most technically skilled German rapper” . Farid Bang, on the other hand, added the "image rapper" Kollegah "with the facet of [...] authenticity."

Dennis Sand wrote in an article on Welt Online that Kollegah and Farid Bang embody the "paradigm shift in the local hip-hop scene" . For the first time since the commercial success of Aggro Berlin, the album made "gangster rap back in the social mainstream" . Kollegah and Farid Bang, however, differ from the Berliners, whose music is characterized by a “complete lack of irony” . Their music breaks with "gangster rap clichés, in which they exaggerate them to such an extent that the question of the fatalistic role model function" does not arise. Young, brutal, good-looking 2 is “a piece of modern street poetry” which, despite the harshness of the lyrics, is subject to the “highest value of multi-layered entertainment” .

Reactions from other artists

As a result of the commercial success of Kollegah and Farid Bang, other hip-hop musicians reacted to Young, Brutal, Handsome 2 . PA Sports commented positively on the chart position. After a few, from a commercial point of view, unsuccessful years for German rap, the chart placement is a sign that a “new era” has begun. Rapper Azad , who had repeatedly made negative comments about Kollegah's music in the past, congratulated the album on the micro-blogging service Twitter . Prince Pi praised the album as "very good light music" , and he is happy about the success. From his point of view, Kollegah is an “uncanny language artist” . Also Fard spoke positively. Fler reacted to Young, Brutal, Good-Looking 2 in the form of a so-called "Disstrack". In the piece Courage for ugliness , published at the end of February, the Berliner makes fun of the texts and methods of presentation as well as the images of Kollegah and Farid Bang.

Ferris MC expressed disappointment in an interview with the website Hiphop.de about his mention in the song 4 elements . In the verse recorded by Farid Bang, two verses read “ I want action and I shoot Ferris MC. Because it is completely out [" Fallout "] like the Playstation game. “As he likes the style of Kollegah and Farid Bang, he feels his mention as a disappointment. In addition, by juxtaposing their ideas of hip-hop and the earlier “elements” of the genre, the two rappers assume a relation to hip-hop that he does not have in this form. Shortly after the interview was published, Farid Bang said on Instagram that he had no dislike for Ferris MC and apologized to the musician.

indexing

In January 2014 the album was indexed by the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors. Apart from the pieces of dynamite and steroid rap , all songs by Jung, brutal, gut-looking 2 are relevant for indexing. In the justification, the committee classified "the contents of the CD as harmful to minors because they are harassing, incite violence and discriminate against women and homosexuals." As a result of the indexing, the album may no longer be sold to children under the age of 18 or distributed via mail order. The previous album was also indexed at the end of June 2012 due to the "drastic depictions of violence expressed in the songs" .

In the meantime, however, the album is available in streaming again

Self-awareness

Kollegah explained in an interview that Young, Brutal, Handsome 2 is, on the surface, normal gangsta rap . From his point of view, however, behind this lies “a lot of technology, sophistication and eloquence” . He attributes the success of the publication to the fact that he and Farid Bang are perceived by their followers as "funny and personable" . In addition, the long-standing friendship of the two rappers becomes clear, which does not represent a “relationship of purpose” based on financial interests as in comparable projects. Kollegah also attaches importance to commercial success to label work.
