King is the fourth solo album by the German rapper Kollegah . It was released on May 9, 2014 via the Düsseldorf label Selfmade Records .

background

In 2013 Kollegah released the album Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 together with Farid Bang . This reached number 1 in the German , Austrian and Swiss album charts and was widely received. Kollegah began working on King while the collaboration album was being marketed . According to Kollegah, the success of Jung, brutal, good-looking 2 was tantamount to a “ liberation ” that allowed him to let his creativity flow. This resembled the way he worked at the beginning of his musical activity. Stylistically, the album represents a departure from Bossaura and is comparable to the “pimp tapes”. After Kollegah had written the first lyrics, the studio recordings began, from which a first version of the album emerged in the summer of 2013. In the following months, pieces of the album were revised or exchanged and additional verses from guest rappers were won. In the course of the creation process, Kollegah was also actively involved in the production, for example through the selection of the samples.

On November 4, 2013 Kollegah announced the album title King in the course of the release of the song Calm Before the Storm . The title is directed, among other things, against the rapper Kool Savas , who calls himself the "King of Rap". Kollegah explained that Savas switched from “ freestyle to screaming ” in his lecture and sold this “ as a rap revelation ”. For this reason he no longer wants to tolerate the designation Savas' as the "King of Rap". At the end of January, April 25, 2014 was initially announced as the release date. The date was later postponed to May 9, 2014. The delay was justified with the review of the JBG-2 DVD included in the Limited Deluxe Edition by the voluntary self-regulation of the film industry . The album cover was presented on February 8, 2014.

Genetics (2013)

For King , Kollegah recorded pieces together with hip-hop musicians Farid Bang , Favorite , Casper , Game and Genetikk . He had previously worked with Favorite and Genetikk, who, like Kollegah, are under contract with Selfmade Records . A collaboration with Casper was originally planned for the album Bossaura , but could not be implemented in the end. Kollegah stated in an interview that a collaboration with Casper " didn't fit the album in retrospect ". From his point of view, Casper is a “ technically unbelievably good rapper ” who is characterized by a “ unique voice ”. Casper was also featured on Kollegah's first pimp tape. Farid Bang appeared more often on Kollegah songs through their joint albums Jung, brutal, gutaussehend (2009) and Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 (2013). With Game , an American rapper is represented for the first time on Kollegah's fourth album. In the past, according to Kollegah, there were more " someone from the B-League of Dipset " on albums by German rappers. However, a “ top feature ” never emerged. Since American contributions usually seem like “ foreign bodies ”, only The Game, whose music he admires, came into question for him. The rapper was contacted via Self- Made Records founder Elvir Omerbegovic .

Versions

King was released in two CD and one vinyl versions as well as a digital release. In addition to the Standard Edition, which in addition to the tracks also contains a King DVD on which the creation process of the album is shown, a Limited Deluxe Edition was released in the form of a box set. In addition to the album, this contains a DVD for the JBG-2 tour (which was renamed "Kollegah & Farid Bang On Tour" due to the indexing of the album), an exclusive t-shirt, a poster and a sticker. The record appeared as a gold-colored double vinyl.

Just three days after publication, Selfmade Records announced that King had achieved gold status in Germany for over 100,000 units sold within 24 hours. A GfK analysis confirmed the label's statements. Accordingly, Kollegah positioned itself with King with over 160,000 units sold in the first week of sales, directly at number one in the German charts . The album also went straight to number one in Austria and Switzerland and, according to Selfmade Records, also achieved gold status in the first week. After four weeks and three days, more than 200,000 units were sold and thus achieved platinum status. By mid-March 2016, 300,000 albums had been sold, with which King was awarded triple gold in Germany.

In the week the album was released, 18 of the 20 album tracks also made it into the German single charts. "King" is the album with the strongest influence on the single charts of all time and Kollegah is the German interpreter with the most songs in the single charts at the same time. Only Michael Jackson had more titles in the top 100 after his death.
