Young, brutal, good-looking is a collaboration album by German rappers Kollegah and Farid Bang . It was released on June 19, 2009 via the Düsseldorf label Selfmade Records . The production of the album was largely taken over by the hip-hop musicians Woroc and Rizbo . In the German charts, the publication reached position 30. Three years after the publication, Young, Brutal, Good-Looking was indexed in Germany . In 2013 a follow-up album was released under the title Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 2 and in 2017 the last part of the trilogy Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 3 .

Emergence

Farid Bang and Kollegah

Both Bang and Kollegah independently announced that they would not release any solo albums in 2009. In some internet forums it was speculated that both rappers were planning a joint album. Thereupon Farid Bang Kollegah spoke on the subject, whereupon the rappers decided to record the album. Both rappers appeared in public for the first time through the title Westdeutschlands Kings , which appeared on the Chronik 2 sampler . The work on Young, Brutal, Handsome finally took three months.

When recording the album, only one guest singer was called in to collaborate on one track. Billy13 that was involved by her friendship with Farid Bang in the project, will sing the hook of the piece Butterfly . The singer is known for her collaboration with Bushido .

Young, brutal, handsome appeared in a standard and a "steelbox edition". The Steelbox Edition was limited to 1500 copies and could only be obtained from the Amazon mail order company . The metal box contains the album, a T-shirt, an autograph card signed by Kollegah and Farid Bang, a poster and the additional title Miami Vice as a bonus CD.

production

Several hip-hop producers were hired to produce this sound carrier. The producer Rizbo, who is under contract with Selfmade Records , is responsible for most of the beats . He produced the titles Ghettosuperstars , Alphamassaka , Wir fuck a few bigwigs , Butterfly and Young, brutal, good-looking . The producer Woroc , who previously mainly contributed to Berlin rappers such as MC Basstard , MOK or Massiv Beats, was responsible for the background music for the pieces Banger and Boss , Schwarzgeld , Mitternacht and Die härtesten im Land . The beat of the intro comes from Vizir, who had already produced 2 tracks for various Kollegah albums and the Chronik label sampler . The beat of the song Bottles on the Doorman can be attributed to Joshimixu. Cee Jay Beats, who produced most of Farid Bang's debut album, Asphalt Massaka , is responsible for the beat of Sonnenbank Pimps . Rooq also produced the title Gangbanger and Niemehr4free Beats the song Die Straße puckt zu . The producer Bjet, who mixed the Chronik 2 sampler , produced the tracks Crime Time and Miami Vice . The latter was only available on the exclusive Steelbox Edition .

marketing

Farid Bang and Kollegah released two tracks for free download before the album was released . The first song, Wir ficken die Szene , produced by Berlin-based Woroc , was released on May 19, followed by the album title Ghettosuperstars at the beginning of June . In addition, a snippet was made available that alludes to some of the tracks on the album.

The title Midnight was implemented as a video. The Serbian capital Belgrade was chosen as the film location . Furthermore, according to Kollegah, they want to use “a different backdrop” after the previous videos and stand out from clips from other rappers. The video was posted on May 26, 2009. In addition, three videos have been released showing Kollegah and Farid Bang doing various activities in Belgrade. Midnight was also released on the 98th CD of the hip-hop magazine Juice .

The release of Jung, brutal, gutaussehend was celebrated on June 19 with a so-called "release party" in the Rheingold in Düsseldorf. In addition to Farid Bang and Kollegah, Karizma, Moemusic, Al-Gear and Zara as well as, as a "special guest", Zaki appeared.

Self-awareness

Steelbox Edition cover

Kollegah announced young, brutal, handsome during a concert of the middle fingers up! -Tour of Selfmade Records as "the most anti-social tape that German rap history has ever seen". Farid Bang dubbed the style of the publication as "gangster rap with technology" and said that the previous German-language gangster rap was neither technically good nor had unusual puns in the lyrics. Regarding the criticism, for example by other rappers, that Kollegah is not authentic in his stylization as a “gangster”, which means that his music cannot be taken seriously, Kollegah explained: “People always think: the more primitive someone raps, and the more clumsy, the more real he is. And the more technically demanding the raps, the less authenticity there is behind it. But that's just nonsense. What we are telling you is not out of thin air. [...] We don't want to bore people with any stories that we have experienced, but, above all on the tape [...] it is [...] primarily about entertainment. "

reception

Chart success

Young, brutal, handsome entered the German album charts at number 30. This makes the album the third record to be released via Selfmade Records in 2009 to occupy a position in the German Top 100 album charts.

criticism

Kollegah and Farid Bang on the cover of the July issue of Juice (2009)

In a review by Max Brandl for the Laut.de e-zine , Jung, Brutal, Gutaussehend received two out of a possible five rating points and was thus rated significantly worse than Kollegah's previous solo albums Alphagene and Kollegah . Compared to these, his contributions on the collaboration album are "almost disastrous". Apart from the beats to Schwarzgeld , Mitternacht and Die Härtsten Im Land , the musical background of the tracks was rated negatively. Overall, the collaboration between Farid Bang and Kollegah works badly: "Not that the two would take turns stealing the show - unfortunately no: Both of them lose their respective strengths." Brandl also criticizes Kollegah's arrogant lecture soft gradually bored tiredness. Farid Bang irritates and looks embarrassing because he attacks numerous German rappers, including Samy Deluxe in particular. Despite all the negative points of criticism, Kollegah shows in titles such as Banger and Boss or Die Härtesten im Land that he continues to be one of the best rappers in Germany and that the release of a solo album in 2010 makes more sense for both Farid Bang and Kollegah.

The editors of the Rap.de website noted that the lack of variety of young, brutal, good-looking can also be viewed positively, as it could just as easily be described as "uncompromising" and thus contradicting the zeitgeist. The titles Banger and Boss as well as Sonnenbank Pimps are positively emphasized , because in this the two musicians rap “doubletime”, that is to say at double speed. Both the titles Alphamassaka , Bottles on the Doorman and Crime Time , as well as the contribution by Billy13, whose voice does not fit into the context of the album, are rated negatively by the editors. In terms of his “flows and comparisons”, Farid Bang sounds a lot like Kollegah on the publication. Kollegah rap successful, entertaining verses, but could not reach the high level of his previous albums.

Three out of a possible five evaluation points were given to the collaboration album by the hip-hop magazine Backspin . With the little thematic variety, the two rappers meet the expectations that were placed in advance of the publication. Kollegah and Farid Bang manage to “entertain at a high level” despite the limited content. This is attributed to the humorous comparisons by the backspin . As the three best pieces, the magazine lists the titles Gangbanger , The Hardest in the Country and Young, Brutal, Good-Looking . Finally, the review explains that the listener should not take the album title too seriously.

The sound carrier received a good rating from the editorial staff of Juice magazine . The album reconciles the “best of two underworlds.” Kollegah's verse in the title Gangbanger is particularly praised , which is as technically mature as it is rare in German rap. What turns out to be rather negative, however, are the reviews of Farid Bang's verse with double time, the guest post by Billy13 and the varied arrangements. In summary, however, the album is "one of the best albums in the first half of Deutschrap 2009." The editors associate this with a rating of four and a half out of a possible six "crowns."

indexing

In June 2012, Young, Brutal, Good-Looking was indexed by the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People, which means that sales to minors in Germany and advertising are no longer possible. Petra Meier, deputy chairwoman of the BpjM, gave the reason for “ the drastic depictions of violence expressed in the songs. " When weighing up artistic freedom [...] and the protection of minors ", the federal authority classified the " youth protection concerns as priority. "
