Life

Shirley Ann Manson was born the second of three daughters. Her father was a specialist in animal breeding and her mother was a singer in a big band . Shirley learned to play the piano at the age of seven and later attended the City of Edinburgh Music School, where she participated in the theater group. Shirley has been the victim of numerous schoolyard teasing and beating because of weight problems, unusually protruding eyes, and her red hair. Shirley's depression channeled into auto-aggression and self-loathing. During her teenage years, Shirley began to rebel. At the age of 16, she left school and took a job in a clothing store.

Manson explained her emotional state to Select Magazine as follows:

Shirley Manson

“I struggle with self-hatred every single day of my life, but not in the destructive way that I did when I was younger. I thought I was the weirdest, most hideous little thing ... I struggle with it to this day. I feel nauseous most of the time. I don't think anymore that I'm the ugliest creature in the world, except when I'm depressed. But I try to deal with it. "

Previous bands

She came into contact with professional music with her first two bands "Autumn 1904" and "Wild Indians". At the age of 16 Shirley Manson played keyboards and sang backing for Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie . She stayed in this band until it was dissolved in 1992. The group had had some success, including placements in the indie charts with the singles The Rattler in 1986 and Face to Face in 1987. In 1988, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie reached number 37 on the UK charts with the re-released single The Rattler and their album Good Deeds And Dirty Rags # 27 on the UK album charts. After Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie broke up, Manson and two other former band members formed under the name "Angelfish". This time Shirley Manson was the lead singer of the formation. Angelfish released an album and two singles (Suffocate Me, Heartbreak To Hate) . Due to a lack of promotion, the album flopped, whereupon Shirley Manson left the band. The band played their last gig on December 17th, 1995 in Glasgow .

A video clip for Angelfish's Suffocate Me on MTV's 120 Minutes drew the attention of guitarist Steve Marker to Shirley Manson. According to Butch Vig in an interview with MTV , there had been one or two encounters with Manson before. One phone call from Vig was enough to get Shirley excited about the idea of a new band, Garbage. He arranged auditions , and Shirley Manson became the band's lead singer.

With Manson's lyrics, the band released the album Garbage . The band's debut album sold 5 million copies worldwide and was twice platinum in the UK , the US and Australia . The album contained the well-known songs Queer, Stupid Girl, Only Happy When It Rains and Vow.

With the second album by Garbage 1998, version 2.0 , Shirley Manson also knew how to put himself in the limelight. She wrote most of the lyrics on this album, was the lead singer and played for the album Takes on the electric guitar (preferably Fender Stratocaster ). However, despite her participation as a musician, she was seen by critics as a pure figurehead of the band.

In the meantime, Shirley Manson appeared as a model for the Calvin Klein fashion brand and, together with David Arnold, produced the famous theme song The World Is Not Enough for the James Bond film of the same name ( The world is not enough ). In 1996 Shirley Manson married the sculptor Eddie Farrell , from whom she separated in 2001 and subsequently divorced. She recovered well from breast cancer, and since 2001 she has continued to work successfully in the band Garbage. Shirley Manson began writing self-reflective songs that were released on the third album beautifulgarbage . Due to disagreements within the band, Garbage 2003 disbanded for some time. In April 2005, their fourth album, Bleed Like Me , was released, placing it at number 4 in the UK and the US and in the top 10 in Europe.

After the end of her acting time, she began to record new songs for Garbage from 2010, which were released in 2012 on the album Not Your Kind of People .

In 2017, Shirley Manson sat on the jury of the ANCHOR Award and after the Reeperbahn Festival chose a winner with her jury colleagues.
