Siegfried Lorenz (born August 30, 1945 in Berlin ) is a German opera , oratorio and lieder singer ( baritone ).

Life

Siegfried Lorenz studied singing from 1964 to 1969 at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin , where he was a master student of Alois Orth . After several international competition prizes, Walter Felsenstein signed him to the Komische Oper Berlin in 1969 . Until 1973 he was engaged there as a lyric baritone. In 1973 he was hired by Kurt Masur , who created the position of "first vocal soloist" for Lorenz at the Gewandhaus, at the Leipzig Gewandhaus . Lorenz made a name for himself above all as a Bach interpreter and song singer. His recordings of Franz Schubert's songs have won multiple awards.

From 1978 to 1992 Lorenz was engaged as the first lyric baritone at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. There he achieved great successes with Wolfram from “ Tannhäuser ”, the Count from the “ Marriage of Figaro ”, Marquis von Posa from “ Don Carlos ” and Borromeo from Pfitzner'sPalestrina ”.

His CD recordings include Mahler'sKindertotenlieder ” with the Gewandhausorchester under Kurt Masur, the Schubert songs with Norman Shetler , the EMI recording of the “ Meistersinger von Nürnberg ” (in which Lorenz sings Beckmesser ) under Wolfgang Sawallisch , the Bach- Solo cantata " I want to carry the cross staff " and " I have enough " with the Collegium Musicum Leipzig under Max Pommer , Mahler's " Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen " under Günther Herbig and " Five Songs after Friedrich Rückert " with the Staatskapelle Berlin under Otmar Suitner .

Lorenz has made guest appearances with well-known orchestras and conductors in Europe, the USA and Japan . In 1979 he was appointed chamber singer of the German State Opera Berlin and in 1982 professor. From 2001 to 2003 he was professor of singing at the Hamburg University of Music , and since October 2003 he has been professor of singing at the Berlin University of the Arts .

Lorenz lives in Berlin-Mahlsdorf .
