Sigmund-Ulrich von Gravenreuth

Sigmund-Ulrich Freiherr von Gravenreuth (* 21st October 1909 in Munich , † 16th October 1944 via Breslau ) was an officer of the Air Force of the Armed Forces and winner of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves.

Life

After studying law in Munich, von Gravenreuth joined the 19th (Bavarian) Infantry Regiment of the Reichswehr in Landshut on July 2, 1934, and switched to the newly founded Air Force just a year later.

Here he was trained as a fighter pilot. On April 1, 1936, he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1937/38 he flew in the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War . For this he was awarded the Spanish Cross in Gold with Swords in 1939 . Then he was adjutant in the Reich Ministry of Aviation for a short time . At the end of 1939 he came as a pilot to Kampfgeschwader 30 , to which he belonged until his death. On a Junkers Ju 88 -A he successfully flew missions against ship targets in the North Sea and in the Canal, as well as missions during the Battle of Britain .

On November 24, 1940, he was a lieutenant and squadron commander gave the 1./KG 30 to 31 inserts the Knight's Cross. In 1941 his squadron was relocated to Northern Norway, where Gravenreuth soon took over the 2nd group of the squadron. In September 1943 he was appointed as a major squadron commodore and led the squadron at the Steinbock company . The Kampfgeschwader 30 was retrained on fighters ( Bf 109 ) in autumn 1944 . Gravenreuth was killed on October 16, 1944 when he crashed over Breslau with a Bf 109. He is buried at the family home in Affing . Posthumously he was promoted to colonel and on January 9, 1945, the 692nd soldier of the Wehrmacht was awarded the Knight's Cross with the Oak Leaves.
