history

In the 12th century Simonswolde was mentioned as "Simonn Walden", which should mean something like "Forest sacred to Simon Peter", in 1287 the place name was "Sunesdeswalde", possibly dedicated to the pagan deity Sunna, and in 1436 the village is called "Symeswolde “Mentioned in a document. In 1431 it is said to have been called Simiswalde.

During excavations, living spaces were uncovered, which presumably can be dated from the 9th to the 13th century. The so-called barges were raised at a height of five to six meters on which a church 45 meters long and 15 meters wide and a churchyard were laid out. On December 14, 1287, the village was destroyed by the Lucia flood and relocated to the northeast.

Towards the end of the High Middle Ages Simonswolde formed the Süderland with Riepe , Ochtelbur and Bangstede , but was independent as a municipality and fell to Oldersum from 1453 to 1631 by Wiard von Uphusen . During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), Simonswolde was spared major raids due to its remote location and was sold to the city of Emden in 1631 .

Simonswolde was best known for the butter trade, which was delivered to Braunschweig and the Ruhr area . When the time of weaving and broom making came to an end, many residents emigrated to North America , as evidenced by the surnames Heidebrink, Mölendorp, Sybering in Illinois and Iowa .

On July 1, 1972 Simonswolde was incorporated into the new municipality of Ihlow.

Attractions

In the Simonswoldmer Church, which is lengthened to the west, there is a medieval grave slab made of red sandstone , on which a praying human figure is depicted. Hinrich Just Müller's organ is of national importance. It was installed in 1777 on the gallery built a year earlier. The organ and gallery are located between the pulpit and apse and can therefore be seen by visitors as they enter.

In the immediate vicinity of Simonswolde is the Sandwater , an inland lake that is under nature protection.

Sand + WaterWerk

In the swimming pool, which has been closed since 2005, the non-profit sponsoring association Sand + WaterWerk e. V. created a space to experience nature, a socio-cultural meeting point and an extracurricular learning location for kindergartens and primary schools.

Events

A major annual event is the flea market. Every year on the last Sunday in August, thousands of people come to the small village.
