Sir Roger Casement is a black and white film about the fight of the Irish nationalist Roger Casement for the independence of Ireland during the First World War . The television film was produced by ZDF in 1968 as a two-parter. It was first broadcast on September 26 and 27, 1968.
action
The British diplomat of Irish descent Roger Casement sought German arms aid for the independence of Ireland during the First World War. The negotiations are tough and he does not succeed in forming a volunteer brigade from Irish prisoners of war in Germany.
But in the spring of 1916, the German naval intelligence service under Captain Isendahl organized an arms transport to the west coast of Ireland. On the Libau alias Aud , which is camouflaged under the Norwegian flag, 20,000 rifles are transported from Kiel for the Easter Rising , while Casement is transported separately from Heligoland with the SM U 19 to the weapons landing site. But the Libau and the submarine miss each other at their destination and Casement and his companion Monteith are put ashore in a dinghy . The two revolutionaries are immediately arrested by the Royal Ulster Constabulary , while Libau is arrested by the Royal Navy . Casement is taken to London and executed after a trial for high treason .
background
Roger Casement was instrumental in exposing the atrocities of Belgian colonial rule in the Belgian Congo and later sided with the Irish nationalists and their aspirations for independence. His execution for treason in 1916 was preceded by a reputation-shattering campaign about his alleged homosexuality. Leading politicians then refrained from petitions for clemency for Casement.
