Indoor ski area
A ski hall is a closed hall with a slope, the floor of which is covered with artificial snow or with natural snow that is taken from snow areas. You can ski and snowboard all year round in a ski hall . In the broadest sense, roller tracks are also to be regarded as indoor ski slopes; they work by means of an inclined treadmill that carries a sliding surface.
history
With the Snow Palace in Vienna , built by the Norwegian ski jumper Dagfin Carlsen , who lives in Vienna , Mayor Karl Seitz opened the world's first ski hall on November 26, 1927 . It was located in the former north-west station . The slope in the 3000 square meter ski area went down a wooden ramp. A ski jump made jumping distances of up to 20 meters possible. The skiers had to go up the "mountain" on foot as there was no ascent aid. However, toboggans could be pulled up with an electrically operated system. The English experimenter Lawrence Clarke Ayscough made the artificial snow from soda . The hall was only in operation until May 1928.
The simple treadmills with adjustable incline and speed, which are covered with plastic mats, also known as roller tracks or ski simulators, represent a further step towards ski training regardless of the weather. These emerged in Europe in the early 1980s. There are also roller tracks without weather protection which are not included in the following list (referred to as the Borstelbahn in the Netherlands ); they are often used for training for competitive athletes.
In the further development several slopes were added next to each other and with different degrees of difficulty, also toboggan runs, small jumps, fun parks for snowboarders. Since then the number of indoor ski slopes has been growing all over the world; the facilities are getting bigger and bigger and combined with more and more sports, e.g. B. Snowmobiling .

surface
The largest ski hall in Europe with 35,000 m² of slopes is located in Landgraaf in the Netherlands. The indoor ski center in Harbin , Asia, which was only opened in 2017, has 80,000 m² of ski area, making it the largest facility in the world (as of December 2017).
Use for championships
In the Snow Funpark in Wittenburg, the International German Championship in the halfpipe took place for the first time on October 3rd, 2007 in a hall.
The Neuss ski hall , which was the first ski hall to open in Germany (January 3, 2001), has a red slope with a 28 percent gradient . Three of the indoor ski facilities listed below even have black slopes .
Number per country
Most of the ski halls are in the Netherlands ; at the end of 2017 there were almost 50 including roller tracks.
