Slavenka Drakulić (born July 4, 1949 in Rijeka ) is a Croatian writer and journalist.

Life

Slavenka Drakulić is one of the most famous Croatian writers, her novels and non-fiction books have been translated into many languages, eight of them so far into German.

She writes as a journalist for international daily newspapers and magazines, including the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Together with her husband, the Swedish journalist and writer Richard Swartz , she owns a house in Istria and also lives temporarily in Zagreb, Stockholm, Vienna and Berlin. She travels a lot.

In 2002 she was awarded the Robert Geisendörfer Prize in the radio category for her book " War criminals from the former Yugoslavia before the International Court of Justice in The Hague" together with Nikolai von Koslowski (director) .

In 2005 she was awarded the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding for her book No one was there - war crimes in the Balkans in court . In 2020 she and Richard Swartz will receive the International Stefan Heym Prize .
