The Slovak Ore Mountains ( Slovenské rudohorie in Slovak ) are the largest mountains in Slovakia in terms of area and lie in the course of the Western Carpathians . It adjoins the Low Tatras to the south and covers most of southern central Slovakia. Its heights are lower than those of the Tatras, but it is economically significant due to its ore and other deposits . Many mines are now closed.
The current name of the mountain was also common before 1918 , when Slovakia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary . In German it was called the Hungarian Ore Mountains until shortly after the First World War , but Slovenské Krušnohorie in the inter-war period (state association with the Czech Republic) . Another name that is still used by geologists, but generally rarer, is Spišsko-gemerské rudohorie ( Spiš - Gemer -Erzgebirge).
Geographical-geological characteristics

- Width: 25 to 40 km
- Area: approx. 4000 km²
The relief is massive, mostly plateau-like . In contrast to other mountain ranges in Slovakia, it has only one (and small) mountain basin and only in the south has the character of a mountainous country .

The mountain range comprises the following landscape units, all of which, except for the two karst areas , are densely forested:
- Veporské vrchy in the west of the mountains near Brezno
- Spišsko-gemerský kras in the middle north, with the Slovak Paradise in front ;
- Revúcka vrchovina in the center and
- Stolické vrchy north of it;
- Rožňavská kotlina and
- Volovské vrchy in the east;
- Čierna hora (about Black Mountain ) in the northeast near Prešov
- Slovenský kras ( Slovak Karst ) in the southeast, in Hungary the Észak-Borsodi karszt accordingly.

history
The once rich ore deposits ( iron , manganese , copper , lead , tin , antimony ) have been mined since time immemorial, more intensively since the 14th century , and are now largely exhausted.
