action

Holly Berenson and Eric Messer experience a catastrophic blind date thanks to an attempted pairing of a couple of friends and actually never want to see each other again. But when the parents of their sponsored child Sophie are killed in a car accident, everything turns out differently. The two have stipulated in their will that in the event of their death, Holly and Eric should look after the child. Shocked but full of a sense of duty, the two begin their parenthood with one-year-old Sophie. While they take care of Sophie in a rather inexperienced way and are also fully employed, their relationship with each other is only slowly relaxing. In the course of their first year together, it looks like Holly and Eric will become a real couple, even if the likable pediatrician Dr. Sam Nelson has since shown a serious interest in Holly. But then Eric is offered a job in Phoenix and moves there from Atlanta .

He comes to visit on Thanksgiving , but leaves the house before dinner after a heated argument with Holly. Holly realizes that she loves him. She wants to prevent him from flying back home at the airport, but only arrives there when the plane takes off. Back home, she is surprised to find Eric, who confesses his love to her. The film ends with Sophie's second birthday.

criticism

“The pretty comedy This is the life of director Greg Berlanti combines two fun themes: an involuntary couple like cats and dogs and the adventure of life with a baby. What convinces the most is the cheeky, carefree joke of the dialogues. You can tell from the story that it did not come from the test tube. It's harmless mainstream entertainment, but the originality of the script by first-time writers Ian Deitchman and Kristin Rusk Robinson and the bite of the staging give it freshness. "

- Bianka Piringer on cinefacts.de

“A filmmaker like Mike Leigh might even have conjured up a brilliant tragic comedy out of such a constellation, but this preformatted Hollywood product lacks the nuances to create believable happiness from ruins. And so the burgeoning gender struggle between the professionally fully engaged legal guardians is just as papery as the moments of shared parents' happiness, which lead to a happy family ending with tiring unstoppability over all hurdles. "

- Martin Schwickert in Der Tagesspiegel

“In fact, So life follows a completely predictable dramaturgy, works with the usual clichés and set pieces such as baby puke and kaka and is not surprising at any point. What saves him are the more complex issues, which are only touched on here, but by no means only dealt with superficially: Face a great responsibility, although you don't have to. "
