At the end of 1950, the SED regional leadership in Saxony decided on Kurt Krjeńc as the successor to Domowina chairman Pawoł Nedo , who had led the organization again before it was banned by the National Socialists in 1937 and since the end of the war. Nedo was transferred to Dresden and resigned from his honorary position in 1951. Krjeńc became the national chairman of Domowina. Under his leadership, the organization was restructured and firmly integrated into the power structure of the GDR. The introduction of the Sorbs to socialism became the declared main purpose of the Domowina.

Krjeńc remained Domowina chairman for over 22 years until he officially resigned in 1973 for health reasons. After his retirement, the office of chairman was abolished and only reintroduced in 1990 as part of the democratization of Domowina.
