Solihull [ˈsɒlɪˌhʌl] is a city in England in the United Kingdom . It has 94,753 inhabitants (as of 2001) and is the seat of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull with more than 200,000 inhabitants. The city belongs to the metropolitan county West Midlands , is part of the agglomeration of Birmingham with more than 2,600,000 inhabitants and lies exactly between the major cities of Birmingham in the west and Coventry in the east.
history
In 1901 Solihull had just 7,500 inhabitants. But in the following years the population should explode. This was mainly due to the fact that the neighboring city of Birmingham was bursting at the seams and more and more people were moving to Solihull, making the city something of a dormitory for Birmingham. In the 1960s, numerous new business complexes were built in the city center, to which many historic buildings fell victim.
traffic
Not only thanks to the nearby Birmingham Airport , the city is very conveniently located. There is also a direct connection to the train connection between London and Birmingham. In addition, thanks to the M40 (towards London West / Heathrow via Oxford ) and the M42 (towards Nottingham ), there is good connection to the motorway network and the north-south axes M5 (towards Bristol ), M6 (towards Manchester ) and M1 (towards North London in the south and Leeds in the north).
Industry
Solihull is one of the main focuses of the UK automotive industry; The MG Rover Group had its headquarters and a plant there until its bankruptcy in April 2005. Accordingly, Solihull was badly affected by the decline of Rover. Land Rover's main plant is in Solihull . It is the first plant to produce Jaguar and Land Rover models together. Jaguar Land Rover , which has existed in this form since 2013, invested around 1.9 billion euros in a location expansion in the form of a fully automated production line with 613 robots for the Jaguar XE model in 2014 . Until then, the production already included the Range Rover , Range Rover Sport , Land Rover Discovery and, until the end of 2015, the Land Rover Defender . After the expansion, the production area comprises 160,000 square meters and includes a body shop that specializes in aluminum.
