features

Construction of the Imago

The coated silver hairs Imago of Somatochlora kennedyi measures 47-55 mm, of which 35 to 42 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is on average within the genus. The abdomen, which is long compared to body size, is swollen in the area of the first segments . In addition, there is a lighter pattern of the abdomen, which is composed as follows: A light apical ring is located on the second segment together with a central band that runs down to the genital lobes . From the third segment onwards, the abdomen is black and shimmers green.

The part of the thorax to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is metallic green in the front area and has a bluish shimmer. A bit of reddish brown is mixed above and below. The stripes on the sides of the abdomen are light and not very strict. The legs are lighter at the base, but then quickly turn black. The hind wings measure 29 to 34 millimeters. The wings are transparent with a yellow Costa loader and a yellow-brown wing mark ( Pterostigma ).

In the face of the end (is frons ) black out yellowish with greenish tinge and down. The vertex is also black and the back of the head ( occiput ) is brown.

Construction of the larva

The dark brown larva measures an average of 21 millimeters and is 7.33 millimeters wide at the widest point. There are no dorsal hooks and lateral thorns are only found on the ninth segment. Small hairs cover the back of the abdomen and condense to form seams along the tergi edges . These seams are most pronounced on the seventh, eighth and ninth segments. The hairs also form a hem along the sides of the abdomen.

The legs are short and very hairy. The femora of the rear pair of legs measure six millimeters, the rear tibia measure 6.6 millimeters.

The head reaches widths of 6.33 millimeters. The sides of the head merge obliquely into the slightly concave occiput. The joint of the lower lip ( labium ) extends to the coxae of the middle pair of legs. On the Mentum , which is roughly as long as it is wide, there are nine to ten small teeth and twelve to thirteen small mental hairs.

Spread and time of flight

The species is found in the northeastern United States and Canada . There it lives in boreal swamp areas, on shady bog lakes and flat bogs as well as slow flowing waters in the marshland . It flies between May and August.

Similar species

The species Somatochlora franklini and Somatochlora forcipata are very similar to Somatochlora kennedyi . A distinction can be made on the basis of the abdominal appendages and the ovipositor .
