The Somow Sea ( Russian Море Сомова More Somowa ) is a marginal sea of the Southern Ocean and is located in the north of the Antarctic subcontinent East Antarctica , north of the Pennell coast and the Oates coast , Victoria Land , and the Georg V coast , between 150 ° and 170 ° East. To the west of it lies the D'Urville Sea . The Ross Sea begins east of Cape Adare at 170 ° 14 'East .

The Somow Sea has an area of ​​1,150,000 km² and is up to 3,000 meters deep.

240 km north of the mainland coast are the Balleny Islands in the Somow Sea.

The Somow Sea was named in honor of the Soviet-Russian oceanographer and polar explorer Michail Michailowitsch Somow . The name is not internationally recognized and only appears in Russian and Soviet publications.

The name was proposed by Russia for an IHO draft of the Names and Limits of Oceans and Seas in 2002 , but it was not adopted.
