The total solar eclipse of September 12, 2053 takes place largely over North Africa , the Arabian Peninsula , the northern Atlantic and the Indian Ocean .

The eclipse is the eclipse that follows the solar eclipse of August 11, 1999 in the Exeligmos cycle , ie it takes place about 54 years later under almost the same conditions, but much more southerly. In its course it happens to be very similar to the solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 , but since it has a smaller path width (and thus totality duration) than this, some larger cities will not be able to experience a totality this time, but only a deep partial eclipse. The climatic conditions are also similar, Upper Egypt will again have the best conditions. The maximum of the eclipse is about 200 km east of Mecca , the duration of the totality there at 3 minutes and 4 seconds.

For Spain , whose southern tip is touched by the umbra, this is the third and last total solar eclipse in the 21st century.

For Tunisia , this solar eclipse is the second of three total solar eclipses in the 21st century.

The eclipse begins over the Atlantic at sunrise and reaches the southern tip of Spain and the northern tip of Morocco around 9:00 UT, with the central line being in the Strait of Gibraltar . The moon's shadow touches Morocco again north of the Spanish exclave Melilla , before it leaves the Mediterranean , reaches Algeria and crosses its north (approx. 9:05 UT). Southern Tunisia with the island of Djerba is also in the totality zone (9:15 UT). Only the coast of western Libya is touched by the moon's shadow (9:20 to 9:25 UT), in the eastern part the port city of Benghazi (9:35 UT) is clearly missed. In Egypt, the middle Nile valley will experience totality between 10:00 UT and 10:05 UT. After crossing the Red Sea , the Arabian Peninsula is reached at 10:25 UT and crossed until around 11:05 UT. At about 12:00 UT the shadow moves south of India and Sri Lanka over the Indian Ocean and at sunset just reaches the island of Sumatra , where the darkness ends.

Visibility in Central Europe

The eclipse can be observed in Central Europe as a partial eclipse, whereby the coverage decreases significantly towards the north. A coverage of 55.7% is achieved in Bern , 46.2% in Vienna , 49.5% in Munich , and 44.8% in Frankfurt am Main . In Berlin , coverage is then only 35.3%, followed by Hamburg with 34.1% and Flensburg with 31.0%.

Places in the totality zone

Despite a clear difference of 29 s of the Delta T in the calculations of NASA (101.3 s) and Calsky (72.3 s), there is no great difference in the position of the totality zone and thus the totality times of the individual cities.
