The total solar eclipse of April 20, 2061 takes place largely over Eastern Europe , Asia and the Arctic . In western North America , the partial portion of the eclipse can be seen before sunset.

The eclipse is the first central eclipse of the Saros cycle 149, eclipses of this type take place near the poles , in this case near the North Pole . The northern location also causes an unusual course: the shadow of the moon sweeps the earth predominantly in a north or north-westerly direction. Also noteworthy is the large width of the shadow of up to 558.8 km.

The maximum of the eclipse is about 120 km southeast of the Russian settlement Pechora , the duration of the totality there is 2 minutes and 37 seconds.

course

The eclipse begins over southern Russia and eastern Ukraine at sunrise and the moon's shadow moves rapidly in a north-easterly direction over Kazakhstan . In the further course, the entire Urals are swept over before the shadow races over the Arctic Ocean in a north-easterly direction and reaches the Svalbard archipelago . At sunset the darkness ends shortly before the coast of Greenland .
