Sons of the Desert (German Desert Sons ) is an association of friends of the comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy . The founding meeting took place in New York City in 1965 . In the 2020s there were around 300 local associations, seven of them in Germany.

The purpose of the association is to celebrate the work of Laurel and Hardy and to keep the memory of Stan & Ollie alive. Its name goes back to the fictional lodge that played a role in the film Sons of the Desert (1933).

history

In 1964, three years after the publication of his book Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy , author and Laurel and Hardy expert John McCabe (1920-2005) suggested in a letter to Stan Laurel, an association of friends of To found Laurel and Hardy with the purpose of honoring their cinematic work. Stan Laurel replied enthusiastically and immediately provided some ideas for the establishment of such an association. As a motto he suggested "Two Minds Without A Single Thought". The cartoonist Al Kilgore created the coat of arms of the Sons of the Desert , in which the motto is used in Latin translation: Duae tabulae rasae in quibus nihil scriptum est (literally: "Two blank [slate] tablets on which nothing was written")

Newer version of the Sons of the Desert -Fez, distributed by the company Fez-o-rama

McCabe created a fun-serious articles of association ( constitution ), in which he satirized the formalities of many social organizations. Stan Laurel endorsed the document and revised it in a humorous way; he suggested that members wear a fez or blazer patch with the motto on it.

On May 14, 1965, just three months after Stan Laurel's death on February 23, 1965, a small group of Laurel and Hardy admirers, including actors Orson Bean and Chuck McCann , met at the Lambs Club in New York City , cartoonists Al Kilgore and John Municino to help found the Sons of the Desert .

Way of working

Locally in the tents

There is no such thing as a typical Sons gathering as there is such a great diversity among the members. Some tents hold their meetings in pubs where dinner is part of the film program. Others meet in a meeting room and enjoy the films on a big screen. Some tents have held meetings at local educational institutions, and some tents bring the joy of Laurel & Hardy to children's hospitals and nursing homes. Still other tent gatherings are informal gatherings in private homes where snacks are passed around and Laurel & Hardy films are watched. Whatever the format, the meetings will focus on the Laurel & Hardy films.

International Conventions

Usually, meetings of the world association take place every two years as international conventions .

Actors and technicians who have worked with Laurel and Hardy have been frequent guests, and rare films are shown and memorabilia are on display. There was no international convention in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The 2020 convention was supposed to be held in Warwick , Rhode Island , but has been canceled. The next convention is scheduled for 2022 in Albuquerque , New Mexico .
