Soslan Petrowitsch Andijew ( Russian Сослан Петрович Андиев ; born April 21, 1952 in Dsaudschikau , North Ossetian ASSR , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; † November 22, 2018 in Moscow ) was a Soviet wrestler of Ossetian nationality .

Life

Soslan Andijew came from a North Ossetian family in which wrestling had been at home for several generations. Father Pyotr Akhmetovich and the brothers Gennady and Sergei were also wrestlers. So it is not surprising that Soslan also began wrestling at an early age. His first coaches and training partners were his brothers. Later, when he had his first successes, A. Dzgojew, a former world class wrestler, was added. At the age of 20, Soslan was 1.98 m tall and weighed about 110 kg. After becoming Spartakia winner in 1969, he was used in the following years for the Soviet Union at the Junior World and European Championships and won the Junior World Championship in 1969 and the Junior European Championship in 1970 and 1972, each in the free style, the style in which he only wrestled. When the famous Alexander Medved resigned after the Olympic Games in 1972 , Soslan Andijew succeeded this great athlete in 1973 and ranked success after success until 1982. He won two Olympic gold medals, four world championships and three European championship titles. He often met German wrestlers. Roland Gehrke from the GDR and Heinz Eichelbaum from the FRG had no chance against him. In 1973, at the beginning of his international career, he defeated Chris Taylor and Michael Mc Cready , the American representatives, on shoulders in international matches for the team world cup against the USA .

Soslan Andijew was a graduate economist. During his time as an active wrestler he belonged to the SC Dynamo Ordschonikidze as a quasi-professional wrestler (" state amateur "). In September 2006 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .

Soslan Andijew died in Moscow on November 22, 2018 at the age of only 66.
