The Saint Joseph's Chapel , also National Park Church Muhl called, is a church in the district of Muhl the community Neuhütten (Hochwald) in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the parish of Züsch and is often used for events in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park . The namesake is Joseph of Nazareth .

history

The without exception Catholic residents of the hamlet of Muhl belonged to the parish of Birkenfeld until May 9, 1803 and since then to the parish of Züsch . Since the way to the church was often difficult, from 1859 the masses were held in the schoolhouse, which the Bishop of Trier had given to the community in 1850. This regulation only existed until 1874 because the school building had become dilapidated and had to be demolished. There were no more services in the new building.

In 1912, the Züsch pastor Wilhelm Spurk turned to the episcopal authority to revive the old regulation, but the application was rejected. However, a chapel fund was set up, but it was lost in the turmoil of the First World War . After the war, Pastor Michael Müller tried to build a chapel and his own cemetery in the 1920s, but Mayor Peter Düpre dropped the plan in 1927. It was not until 1939 that the project was taken up again by Pastor Christoph Billen, who had been transferred to Züsch. From December 1939, services were held again in an inn in the village, but were prohibited from August 1, 1942. Attempts to reverse the ban have failed.

On April 18, 1945, the first church service took place in the school house after the area around Züsch had been liberated by the Americans on March 17. After the service, three soldiers' graves in the school garden were visited and consecrated. The school hall did not seem very practical in the long term, so a RAD barrack from Hermeskeil was purchased for 2310 RM. The inauguration of the emergency chapel took place on September 2, 1945. The emergency chapel stood in today's street "Im Hengstgraben".

In June 1944, Pastor Billen had approached a community of heirs with the aim of obtaining land for the construction of a chapel with a cemetery. The measure was implemented in May 1951, so that the church council decided to build the chapel in July 1951. Donations from the population of Muhl helped with the construction: At the fair in 1952 alone, 1700 DM were collected; In 64 days the collectors were on the move in a wide area.

The foundation stone was laid on June 22, 1952. After a solemn high mass, the faithful brought the stone in a procession from the emergency church to the building site, where Pastor Billen blessed it. The Neuhüttener pastor Philipp Sossong and vicar Felix Hecker from Damflos were also present . A folk festival was then celebrated at which a raffle was held, the proceeds of which were donated to the chapel.

At the onset of winter 1952/53, the shell of the church designed by the Hermeskeil architect Hilarius Bier was finished. Several surrounding communities had provided lumber from their own forests free of charge. The official inauguration of the finished church took place on August 30, 1953. A big festival was held on this occasion and the citizens all wore festive decorations. The ceremonial sermon was given by the Ordinary Councilor Prelate Dr. Schwickerath from Trier. Pastors Christoph Billen, Philipp Sossong, Peter Mohr from Hermeskeil and Felix Hecker from Damflos assisted him. A friendship soccer game between Damflos and Neuhütten was also played at the opening ceremony. The total cost of building the church was DM 42,000.

With the opening of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park, the church became an important hub for hiking tours, especially pilgrims in the region, as well as for marketing the region. Therefore, events and concerts take place regularly in the church, most of which are related to the national park. Ecumenical services are also held in the church. The contract for the underlying cooperation between the parish and the national park was signed on August 18, 2017. The subsequent expansion to a ranger service station costs 300,000 euros, 75 percent of which finance LEADER programs . The church has a blog that provides information on the events and events.
