Christian Church of St. George

The St. Georg Church is a Christian Catholic church building in Zuzgen in the canton of Aargau . It stands near the south-eastern edge of the village on a step above the parish granary . The late baroque building, consecrated to Saint George , was built from 1737 to 1738 as a Roman Catholic parish church. In 1878, as a result of the Kulturkampf, it passed to the Christian Catholics and was used equally until 1902 .

history

The church dates back to the 10th century, but systematic archaeological research has not yet been carried out. The collator was the Säckingen women 's monastery . In 1737 the Auxiliary Bishop of Basel issued the decree for a new building. Josepha von Liebenfels, the abbess of the women's monastery, signed the building contract with the famous baroque master builder Johann Caspar Bagnato , who received 700 guilders for his services . Although the work was completed after a year, the Bishop of Basel did not inaugurate it until September 14, 1750. The church clock was replaced in 1818 and in 1864 the Aarau foundry H. Rüetschi made a new bell.

In 1873, during the Kulturkampf, a Christian Catholic association was founded, which the cantonal government recognized as legally competent five years later. In 1898 the association went up in the parish of Wegenstetten - Hellikon -Zuzgen. On the instructions of the Vatican, the Roman Catholics were only allowed to use the church for sermons from 1878 onwards; the Lord's Supper had to be carried out in the neighboring parish store. In 1902 the Roman Catholics moved into their own church on the opposite side of the main street. A comprehensive renovation of the old church took place between 1966 and 1968 under the direction of Werner Vogt and Paul Fischer.

Building

The ridge of the roof follows the fall line of the slope, which is why the choir is sunk a little into the terrain and the opposite end stands on an artificial terrace. The church is surrounded by the walled community cemetery. The floor plan corresponds to that of a rural hall church with a five-sided polygonal choir. Two rectangular annexes are built at the transition; the northern one contains the sacristy , the southern one serves as a cool room for corpses before burials. Due to the common width and the seamlessly overlapping roof, the nave and choir look like a closed structure. The outer walls are structured by red foot, ledge and vertical bands as well as white wall surfaces. The octagonal church tower above the main portal has an onion dome .

The interior is characterized by the contrast between the white walls and the furnishings in dark tones. The ceiling mirrors show frescoes depicting the story of Mary. The relief coat of arms of Josepha von Liebenfels is attached to the forehead of the choir arch. The reredos for the high altar , created in 1739 and depicting Georg's dragon fight and Fridolin von Säckingen , was made by Hans Nägele . The pulpit is attached to the north wall, which can be reached via a staircase from the sacristy. The side altars from 1775 are kept in the Rococo style. In 1767 Johann Baptist Hug from Freiburg im Breisgau created the organ , which is placed on the wooden choir gallery.
