The Stade de la Mosson is a football stadium in the French city of Montpellier in the Hérault department . It offers 32,939 seats and is the home of the football club HSC Montpellier .
history
The stadium is owned by the city and opened in 1972. It is located west of Montpellier near the Mosson River , which gives the stadium its name. The sports facility is mainly used for soccer. But there are also rugby games . The arena has been officially named “Stade de la Mosson-Mondial 98” since the 1998 World Cup. Among the fans it is also nicknamed La marmite du diable ( German Der Teufelskessel ).
In 2002 and 2003 the stadium was flooded because the Mosson overflowed its banks. The lawn and the players' cabins were flooded.
After HSC Montpellier rose to the French premier league in 1987, the arena was completely renovated and expanded to 23,500 seats. For the 1998 World Cup , the stadium was expanded to accommodate 35,500 spectators. For the 2007 Rugby Union World Cup , a new lawn was laid, two video walls were installed and the floodlights and the press stand were renewed.
At the end of September 2014, heavy rains flooded the city of Montpellier and the stadium. Within a few hours, at 300 liters per square meter, around half of the usual annual rainfall in the region fell and flooded the playing field as well as rooms in the main stand such as the changing rooms, fitness studio, media center and parts of the club offices. The amount of damage in the sports facility is not yet known. The club's youth players were called upon to help repair the damage. Around 4,000 people in the city had to be evacuated and 60 communities were declared a disaster area.
