Stanley Clinton Davis

Stanley Clinton-Davis, Baron Clinton-Davis , PC (born December 6, 1928 ) is a British politician ( Labor Party ). From 1985 to 1989 he was EU Commissioner in the Delors I Commission .

life and career

Education and career

Clinton Davis was the son of Sidney Davis and attended Hackney Downs School , the Mercers' School and King's College London , where he specialized in the 1950 law ( Law graduate). From 1949 to 1950 he was a member of the Executive Council of the National Association of Labor Student Organizations . Clinton-Davis was one of several presidents of the Society of Labor Lawyers . In 1953 he was admitted to the bar ( solicitor ).

In the general election in 1955 he was unsuccessful for the constituency of Portsmouth (Langstone) and in the general elections in 1959 and 1964 for the constituency of Yarmouth, also unsuccessful. From 1959 to 1971 he was a councilor ( Councilor ) of the London Borough of Hackney and from 1968 to 1969 mayor ( Mayor ). He was Chairman ( Chair ) of Social Services .

Membership in the House of Commons

Clinton-Davis was elected to the House of Commons in the 1970 general election for the Hackney Central constituency. He held this seat until 1983 when the constituency was abolished. In the Labor government from 1974 to 1979 under Prime Minister Harold Wilson and later James Callaghan he was Minister of State ( Junior Minister ) for Trade. From 1979 to 1981 he was the opposition spokesman for trade, prices and consumer protection ( Prices and Consumer Protection ) and from 1981 to 1983 for foreign affairs.

EU Commission and Europe

From 1985 to 1989 Clinton-Davis was EU Commissioner in the Delors I Commission . He was responsible for the environment, consumer protection, traffic and transport.

From 1999/2000 to 2001/2002 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the WEU .

Membership in the House of Lords

Clinton-Davis was named a Life Peer as Baron Clinton-Davis, of Hackney in the London Borough of Hackney on May 8, 1990 . He gave his inaugural address at the House of Lords on June 14, 1990. On the House of Lords' website, he gives political interest, transport policy , environment, foreign policy , law, civil liberties and international trade. He mentions the Commonwealth and European countries as well as Israel , South Africa and the USA as states of interest .

From 1990 to 1997 he was the opposition spokesman for transport. From 1990 to 1996 he was deputy speaker of Trade and Industry ( Supporting Spokesperson for: Trade and Industry ) and 1990-1997 of Foreign Affairs ( Foreign Affairs ). Clinton Davis was Minister of State at the Department of Trade and Industry from 1997 to 1998 . He has been a member of the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments since 2009 .

He is Vice President of the Parliamentary Committee Against Antisemitism .

From 2001 onwards, Clinton-Davis was regularly present on meeting days.

Further offices and honors

Clinton Davis was from 1989 to 1997 and again from 1998 Consultant ( Consultant ) to the key areas of Europe and the environment at the law firm SJ Berwin & Co. Solicitors . From 1990 to 1997 he was a consultant ( Consultant ) of the European Cockpit Association and since 1990 at the Society of Labor Lawyers , where he since 1987 Vice President ( Vice-President is). He is also Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health .

He is an honorary member of the Executive Council of Justice . He has been a member of the UN Selection Committee for the UNEP-Sasakawa Environment Award since 1989 , and has been Chairman since 1999 . From 1993 to 1997 he was a member of the Supervisory Board ( Executive ) of the Institute of Jewish Affairs .

Clinton Davis was from 1989 to 1997 and from 1998 to 2001 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Advisory Committee on Protection of the Sea and since 2001 its president. Until 1996 he was Chairman of the Packaging Standards Council . Until 1997 he was a member of the Advisory Panel CIS Environ Trust . He has served as President of the British Multiple Sclerosis Society (Hackney Branch), President of the UK Pilots Association (Marine), President of the Association of Municipal Authorities , President of the Institute of Travel Management , President of the Aviation Environment Federation . He has been President of the British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA) since 1998 .

Until 1997 he was a member of the Trustee of the International Shakespeare Globe Center . In 2000 he was a member of the board of directors ( panel ). From 1989 to 1996 Clinton-Davis was President and from 1996 to 1997 Chairman ( Chair ) of the Refugee Council .

Clinton-Davis has been a member of the Privy Council since 1998 .

Working in public

In January 1998, Clinton-Davis came under fire for allegedly misleading the multilateral investment agreement.

In March 1998 he announced a restructuring of the British Overseas Trade Board with the creation of new working groups.

In June 2011, Clinton-Davis and other peers who also held high positions in the EU came under criticism in circles critical of Europe because of his influence and his pay.

In 2011 he criticized the lack of flag from public buildings with the European flag on Europe Day .

honors and awards

In 1990 he was honored with the Grand Cross Order of Leopold II for his services to the European Commission. The Polytechnic University of Bucharest awarded him an honorary doctorate . Clinton-Davis is a Fellow of Queen Mary & Westfield College London , King's College London and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management .

Family and private

Clinton-Davis has been married to Frances Jane Lucas, daughter of Marcus Gershon Lucas, since 1954. Together they have four children, three daughters and one son. In 1990 he changed his name to Stanley Clinton Clinton-Davis.
