Karl-Heinz Narjes (born January 30, 1924 in Soltau ; † January 26, 2015 in Bonn ) was a German politician ( CDU ). From 1969 to 1973 he was Minister of Economics and Transport for the State of Schleswig-Holstein and from 1981 to 1988 EC Commissioner .

Life and work

After the maturity notice in 1941 at the Gymnasium Carolinum in Neustrelitz Narjes joined the Navy and participated as a soldier , last rank lieutenant , on U 91 at the World War II in part. The boat was forced to surface on February 26, 1944 in the central North Atlantic by depth charges from the British frigates HMS Affleck , HMS Gore and HMS Gould and was moved to position 49 ° 45 ′  N , 26 ° 20 ′  W in naval grid reference BD 3641 Crew sunk themselves. There were 36 dead and 16 survivors. He was then taken prisoner by the British .

After his release from captivity, Narjes completed a law degree at the University of Hamburg , which he completed in 1949 with the first state examination in law. In 1952 also his promotion to Dr. jur. with the work of customs and economic unions as legal forms of foreign economic policy . In 1953, after completing his legal clerkship, he passed the second state examination in law. He then worked as an assessor at the regional tax office in Bremen . In 1955 he joined the Foreign Office as an attaché, and in 1956 he was deputy consul at the consulate general in Basel. In 1958 he was delegated to the Commission of the European Economic Community (EEC) as Legation Councilor . Here he became head of cabinet of the President of the EEC Commission, Walter Hallstein , in 1963 , and in 1968 Director General for Press and Information of the Commission of the European Community (EC).

Karl-Heinz Narjes was married and had two children. He died on January 26, 2015 and was buried on January 30, 2015 after a funeral service in the Evangelical Church of the Redeemer in Bad Godesberg in the cemetery in Bad Godesberg.

Narjes had been a member of the CDU since 1967.

MP

From 1971 until his resignation on January 29, 1973, Narjes was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament . He moved into the state parliament as a directly elected member of the constituency of Kiel- Mitte.

From 1972 until his resignation on January 9, 1981, Narjes was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1972 to 1976 he was chairman of the economic committee .

Karl-Heinz Narjes has always entered the Bundestag via the Schleswig-Holstein state list.

Public offices

On November 10, 1969, he was appointed Minister of Economics and Transport to the state government of Schleswig-Holstein led by Prime Minister Helmut Lemke . In this function he also belonged to the cabinet headed by Gerhard Stoltenberg from 1971 onwards. Because of his election to the German Bundestag in the 1972 Bundestag elections , he left office on January 29, 1973.

From 1981 to 1984 Narjes was EC Commissioner for Internal Market , Customs Union , Industrial Innovation, Environment, Consumer Affairs and Nuclear Safety and from 1984 to 1988 Vice President of the EC Commission for Industrial Policy, Research and Innovation. In this role he promoted the introduction of a community-wide empty cassette levy, among other things .

Honors

Narjes was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Great Cross of Merit (1977) with a star and shoulder ribbon (1989) and in 1993 the Bavarian Europe Medal .
