Stapeler Moor

The Stapeler Moor is a former nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Uplengen in the district of Leer .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG 143 was 557  hectares . It was almost entirely part of the FFH area "Lengener Meer, Stapeler Moor, Basenmeers-Moor" and bordered the nature reserve " Lengener Meer " in the north, the nature reserve " Spolsener Moor " in the east and the nature reserve " Stapeler Moor " in the south South and Little Sea of Bulls ”. The area has been under nature protection since September 17, 1983. It was added to the newly designated nature reserve " Stapeler Moor und Umgebung " on September 1, 2016 . The responsible lower nature conservation authority was the district of Leer.

The Stapeler Moor was part of the extensive East Frisian central moors. Until 1997, peat extraction was also approved in the nature reserve. After the peat extraction ended, the area was rewetted and has been regenerating ever since. Peat moss , narrow-leaved cottongrass and bell heather and common heather settle in the nature reserve . The Scheidige cottongrass is only found sporadically. Various sundew species can also be found on wet peat surfaces. Common rush and various sedges , including brown and gray sedge , settle in damp depressions .

Large areas are occupied by pipe grass . Gagel , willows such as the Ohrweide and buckthorn settle on the raised bog banks . Drier locations are dominated by common heather and moor and hanging birch .

Moor frogs live in the water-filled peat cuttings . The nature reserve is the habitat of various dragonflies , including shellfish and black darter . In the west of the nature reserve there is a 1.6 km long moor adventure trail completed in 2008. This partly runs on a reconstructed boardwalk . There is also an observation tower on the edge of the nature reserve.
