Star Wars: Battlefront II (usually briefly called SWBF II ) is a video game set in the Star Wars universe . It is the sequel to the hit first-person and third-person shooter Star Wars: Battlefront . In 2017 a new edition of the game appeared, see Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017) . Like its predecessor, the game was developed by Pandemic Studios and published by LucasArts for Windows , PS2 , Xbox and PSP in late 2005 . The PSP port was developed by the Savage Entertainment studio .

In the game, the player takes on the role of a soldier on behalf of one of the four central factions of the Star Wars films and takes part in military conflicts. Unlike its predecessor, Battlefront II includes a cohesive campaign in which the background story plays a bigger role. Hence, the missions of this campaign vary from one another to a greater extent than they did in Battlefront . The campaign deals with the rise of the empire and the Galactic Civil War , so it is timed between the Star Wars films episode 3 and episode 5 . Other innovations include new weapons, playable hero characters and a medal system.

Development of the game began shortly after Battlefront was released . An early version was demonstrated at the E3 game fair in 2005. Technically, the title is based heavily on its predecessor. The multiplayer mode was expanded, as it allows up to 64 players to take part in a game.

Overall, Battlefront II received a mixed or positive reception from the trade press. Testers praised the expansion of the content known from the predecessor. In return, they criticized computer opponents that were too weak and unspectacular level design. The title was also successful from a commercial point of view. With over seven million units sold, the title is one of the best-selling of all Star Wars video games .

Since April 26, 2018, it has also been playable on Xbox One thanks to backward compatibility .

Star Wars: Battlefront II takes place in the Star Wars universe and connects the storylines between the individual Star Wars films. The storyline is largely based on the cinematic model, but has a different ending than this . The campaign, which consists of 17 missions and a training mission, tells the story of a unit of the 501st Legion , an elite legion of the Republican Clone Army . This legion owes its name to the 501st Legion , a large Star Wars fan organization. The missions are carried out in cordoned-off combat areas that are also used in other areas of the game.

The campaign begins with a Republic attack on an anti-Republic Separatist outpost on Geonosis . There the player is familiarized with the basic game mechanics. After completing the mission, the player will be sent to a ruined city ​​on the planet Mygeeto , where he will secure a powerful Confederation energy source. This is followed by a space battle over the capital of the Republic, Coruscant , in which the player must pave the way for the Jedi to the enemy flagship by destroying enemy guns and fighters.

When the 501st is deployed on Felucia , it is ordered to support the Jedi Aayla Secura in the attack on a separatist base. On the forest planet Kashyyyk , she is tasked with protecting the planet from an enemy invasion. To do this, she first destroys the enemy fleet in orbit of the planet and supports the locals on the ground in defending the planet. During the battle, spies of the republic have now found the whereabouts of the leadership of the separatists. The 501st is sent to Utapau to take it out alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi . During this mission, which is successful, an overthrow takes place on Coruscant , in which the Jedi are declared enemies of the state and the republic is transformed into a dictatorship, the empire. As part of the new Imperial Army, the 501st Legion is dispatched to Coruscant to occupy the Jedi Temple and eliminate the remaining resistance.

By eliminating the opposition, the empire establishes itself as a new government and reorganizes the military. In the course of this, the 501st Legion receives new equipment. The first mission under the banner of the Empire is an attack on the royal family of the planet Naboo , which has positioned itself against the Empire. There the 501st eliminates the queen and her bodyguard. The Legion, which has since been nicknamed Vader's Faust , is then tasked with eliminating the last supporters of the separatists and other troublemakers.

Meanwhile, there is a prison break on the Death Star , an imperial battle station, in which a group of rebels succeeds in stealing construction plans for the station. The 501st is sent to turn it off, but only partially succeeds. Most of the rebels fell in battle, but the plans could still be sent to a distant rebel ship. This ship, named Tantive IV , is being pursued from the Imperials to the planet Polis Massa . After an only partially successful mission there, imperial scouts manage to track down the ship and arrest it. The troops of the 501st Legion take part in a boarding maneuver in which the ship's crew is overwhelmed and Princess Leia , one of the leaders of the rebels, is arrested. However, they again fail to secure the construction plans of the Death Star.

The Rebel Alliance finally analyzes these plans and leads an attack on the battle station in orbit of the planet Yavin IV , in which it is destroyed. The 501st Legion, which escaped death on the battle station by deploying on Polis Massa, is dispatched to retaliate on the planet Yavin IV, where the rebels are based. She succeeds in eliminating a large part of the rebels. However, there were some survivors on the opponent's side who were able to flee to the arctic world of Hoth . Therefore, imperial troops, including the 501st Legion, are sent to Hoth to finally eliminate the rebellion, which they finally succeed.

Gameplay

General

Battlefront II is based on the principle of its predecessor. It is a shooter set in the Star Wars universe, in which the armies of the four major factions of the Star Wars films compete against each other. The game takes place on different maps that represent locations from the Star Wars universe. Several game modes are available for the individual maps. A novelty in the Battlefront series are the maps that are located in space. There the players fight against each other mostly with star hunters. Star fighters are fictional small spaceships that are comparable to fighter planes .

At the beginning of a battle, the player can choose from one of the four unit classes front soldier, anti-tank troop, sniper and technician. Two more will be unlocked once the player has accumulated enough points in battle. The player earns points by eliminating enemy soldiers and by taking over enemy command posts. The player can at any time by pressing a button between the ego and the third-person perspective switch. Only pure melee fighters, such as Jedi, can only be played in the latter.

If the player falls in the course of a battle, he can immediately return to the game at a control point . Checkpoints are locations on the map where troops and vehicles arrive. An innovation compared to its predecessor is the ability to change the unit class at command posts held by one's own faction. In Battlefront this was only possible through a new entry of the player, which was at the expense of strengthening your own team.

Other innovations in Battlefront II that directly affect the game are the ability of the characters to sprint, new bonuses that can be collected on the cards and the option to play as a hero yourself. Game modes

The game is divided into three central areas. The core of each area, fighting battles, always follows the same structure. Rather, it is the framework conditions that vary.

The campaign tells the storyline of the game. It consists of 17 consecutive missions in which the player can skip space battles. In the course of a campaign mission, the player is given a series of objectives that he must fulfill. This includes conquering certain areas, turning off important people or backing up data.

In free play, which is referred to as immediate betting , the player can determine the betting parameters himself. So he can adjust the place of battle, the strength of the army and the type of operation. The maps used in the campaign are available as combat areas. Only one goal is issued per mission, so this mode is less linear than the campaign. The free game can be played individually against computer-controlled opponents as well as against human opponents via a network.

The fourth part is called the Galaxy Conquest . The Galaxy Conquest combines tactical combat with strategic elements. The game is played on a three-dimensional map that depicts numerous planets. The player is given command of a fleet with which he can attack the hostile planets. An attack is designed like one of the free game stakes. The game is turn-based , i.e. the two players take turns taking turns. Both parties can purchase bonuses for individual bets. These include expanded ammunition stocks or additional troop supplies. The players earn the money for bonuses through successful conquests. The game is won by the player who keeps all of the opponent's bases occupied.

Mission types

The game modes of Battlefront II have parallels to other shooters like Battlefield . In most games, the different teams have approximately the same material, so the odds are always balanced. Additional game variants have been implemented especially for the PSP version.

In the conquest (Engl. Conquest ) concern is that two teams compete in a given area from each other and try to take all the strategic points. Troops from the side to which the point belongs can be flown in at these points. A second possibility to win is to wear out the opposing army, because both sides only have a finite number of reinforcement troops. As soon as a side has no reserves left due to excessive losses in combat, it has lost the battle.

Two teams compete against each other in the hunt , but one of these is not one of the usual armies and consists of native species. The goal in this mode is to rub off enemy reinforcements.

In mode Secure the flag (Engl. Capture the flag ) are hidden at the start of a match, one or two flags on the map. The participating armies are trying to find this flag and bring it to their base. As soon as you succeed in doing this, the team that secured the flag gets a point and the flag is hidden again. The winner is the team that has either secured the most flags after a certain period of time or has collected a predetermined number of flags.

Attack mode takes place on battlefields in space. Both teams try to score points by shooting down enemies, but above all by destroying critical systems of the battleships. However, there is also an area in every battleship where battles between infantrymen can take place. This is the hangar area that can be attacked by boarding maneuvers.

Armament

In Battlefront II the player can choose from a large number of weapons. Are available as pistols , assault rifles , sniper rifles , grenades and rocket launchers . The player chooses the weapons indirectly when selecting his troops. Each troop has its own individual armament, which it cannot change, for example, by picking up weapons on the battlefield. Most troops carry three to four weapons, one primary, one secondary and two supporting. Primary weapons are a unit's more powerful weapons that are mostly used for attack. An example of such is the marksman's sniper rifle. A troop's secondary weapon is more for defensive purposes and is designed for close range combat. An example of this is the pistol. The soldiers only carry a very limited number of supporting weapons with them. They can be used to set up defensive positions or to destroy large areas. Examples are grenades and mines .

There are a few vehicles available to players in Battlefront II . These include sleds, tanks and star fighters. Vehicles are flown in at reinforcement points at regular intervals and can be used by almost any unit. Many vehicles can accommodate more than one unit because they have additional shooting positions. In contrast to its predecessor, all vehicle guns have infinite stocks of ammunition. Particularly large vehicles , the AT-TE and the AT-AT , also have the function of a mobile command post, so that newly arriving troops can be dropped off directly at these vehicles. These vehicles are assigned to a specific faction and, unlike the others, cannot be taken over by enemy troops.

Awards

A novelty in Battlefront II are the medals, which distinguish special achievements of the player. Medals can be collected in the course of a battle by the player getting high scores or getting many kills with a special weapon. If the player wins a medal that is achieved by killing them, an improved version of the weapon is made available to the player as a reward. The other medals unlock improved armor. These bonuses are available to the player until he is shot down by an opponent or a game ends. If the player has received a medal exceptionally often, he will automatically receive the corresponding bonus at the beginning of each battle.

In addition to medals, the player can also be awarded promotions. The player receives promotions when the value of his global points account reaches certain thresholds. The rank of the player determines how many troops he can command.

Command function

Like its predecessor, Battlefront II includes a command function. This allows him to issue commands to the AI teammates. A total of four commands are available, two of which are important for normal combat situations and two for controlling vehicles. In the fight on foot, the computer-controlled players can be instructed to accompany the player or swarm out. If the player controls a vehicle, he can instruct the team members to get into the vehicle, provided that it can accommodate several people. The studios Pandemic and Savage Entertainment were responsible for the development of Star Wars: Battlefront II . Eric Gewirtz, who already worked on Battlefront , and Peter Dellekamp Siefert acted as lead designers .

The game was first announced on April 21, 2005 at a Star Wars event in Indianapolis by the publisher LucasArts. New locations and space battles were mentioned as new elements. The autumn of the same year was announced as the expected release date. The game should be released at the same time as possible with the DVD release of the film Revenge of the Sith . An early version of the game was first presented at the E3 game fair. There were further insights into the new play elements. For example, the playable heroes were placed in the foreground during the presentation. The multiplayer mode was also discussed. This will be included in all versions of Battlefront II and in the Windows implementation will support the play of up to 64 players, 32 more than in the predecessor, in one game. In a later interview with a LucasArts representative, Shara Miller, she described Battlefront II as an evolution of the first part, so many familiar game elements would be seen in improved form in the new game.

In technical terms, Battlefront II was developed similarly to its predecessor. It uses the same engine , the Zero engine, that has been used in several Pandemic titles so far. For Battlefront II some actors and speakers were recruited who also worked on other Star Wars projects, such as Temuera Morrison (played Jango Fett and the clone soldiers in all publications), Corey Burton (set Count Dooku to music in the series The Clone Wars ) or Bob Bergen (voiced Luke Skywalker in the Rogue Squadron games). The game music is composed of excerpts from the original pieces of music used in the films, which were composed by John Williams . Jesse Harlin made the selection.

On October 31, 2005, Battlefront II was released in Europe. A day later, the title was also published in North America. The title was released in Japanese markets on January 26, 2006. The DVD release of Revenge of the Sith has been given an access code for a demo version of the game that can be played on Xbox. This is special because LucasArts has rarely published free game demos on the Internet.

On December 19, 2005 and January 31, 2006, two paid expansion packages were released exclusively for the Xbox version via Microsoft's Xbox Live network . These added new, playable heroes and some cards from the predecessor. In the meantime, these download offers are no longer available because the responsible servers were switched off on April 15, 2010.

On February 15, 2006, the developers released a patch for the Windows version that supports player-made mods . A week later, on February 21, official programs that the game's developers used for their work appeared for Battlefront II under the title ZeroEditor . This enabled technically savvy users to create their own maps, models and scripts and to integrate them into the game. In the months that followed, various developer groups released numerous modifications, some of which were very extensive.

On May 30, 2014 GameSpy shut down several servers, including the one responsible for the multiplayer mode of Battlefront II . The company Electronic Arts , which had in the meantime acquired the rights to the Battlefront series, announced that it would provide its own servers to compensate, which would run until the end of June of the same year.

Reviews

Battlefront II received an overall positive reception from the trade press . Metacritic , an online database for test reports, calculated the highest meta ratings for the versions for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 with 83 and 84% respectively. The versions for Windows and PSP performed weaker, they received 78 and 69 points.

One of the most frequently commented points, both positively and negatively, was the great similarity to its predecessor, Battlefront . An author of the online magazine IGN , Ivan Sulic, commented that the lack of major innovations, not only in relation to the predecessor, but also in relation to other titles in the genre, could pose a serious problem for Battlefront II .

IGN editors attended the game's presentation at E3. They rated Battlefront II as one of the best multiplayer titles that only SOCOM 3: US Navy SEALs had to admit defeat in this area . In a separate test report, the author Ivan Sulic praised the expansion of the game to include spaceships, Jedi and new game modes, but he criticized the fact that these were not optimally integrated into the game. GamePro's editorial team wrote brief reviews of several versions of Battlefront II . The focus was always on multiplayer skills. The almost identical implementations for Xbox and Windows were described as a variedly designed shooter, which, however, struggled with connection problems and similar difficulties. The mobile version of the game performed significantly weaker, as the controls are too cumbersome and the multiplayer mode is only available to a very limited extent.

1UP magazine tested Battlefront II on all platforms, with the implementations for Windows and PlayStation 2 doing the best. The testers rate them as convincing Star Wars games, even if the innovations compared to the predecessor are only minor. The Xbox version was rated as not bad, but it suffers from the strong competition, which includes SOCOM and Halo . With the PSP port, the author criticized the weak multiplayer part, which suffers from severe technical defects.

Awards

In addition to IGN's nomination as the best multiplayer title, Battlefront II was nominated for the 2005 Satellite Award . In addition, it won the Saturn Award, presented annually by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, for the best science fiction video game category.

Sales figures

According to the NPD Group , Battlefront II was ranked sixth among the most commercially successful titles of 2005 and achieved revenues of $ 47 million in the PS2 version alone. In November 2005, 467,000 and 447,000 units of the Xbox and PS2 versions were sold in the United States. In total, it is estimated that over seven million units were sold worldwide, with the PS2 version and the Xbox version being by far the most successful. The title thus clearly exceeded the sales figures of its predecessor and confirmed the role of Battlefronts as the Star Wars game series with the highest sales . So far, only The Force Unleashed , published in 2008, has had a similar sales success.

In August 2006, just under a year after its release, Battlefront II held ninth place in the UK sales charts. In 2007 and 2008, the game was still listed as one of the most played titles on the Xbox Live network.

successor

Battlefront II was initially the last title in the Battlefront series that was developed for Windows. The following titles Renegade Squadron , Mobile Squadrons and Elite Squadron were designed exclusively for mobile consoles such as the Nintendo DS or the PlayStation Portable .

However, the magazine Computer and Video Games stated in 2006 that the Free Radical Design studio was working on a Battlefront III . In the next few months, additional information was made public that confirmed the development. In October 2008, LucasArts applied for a PEGI rating. Still, Free Radical Design announced in the same month that LucasArts had discontinued the project after two years of development due to disagreements between LucasArts and the developer.

New edition

After acquiring a Star Wars license, the US game publisher Electronic Arts announced that the Swedish studio DICE , which was responsible for developing the Battlefield series, would develop a new Star Wars: Battlefront title for multiple platforms will. This game was released in November 2015.

At the end of 2016 it was announced that a new edition would appear under the identical title Star Wars Battlefront II . In contrast to the predecessor, a complete single player campaign will be included. In addition to Digital Illusions, developers are CE Criterion Games and Motives.
