Stephan Becker (born December 2, 1960 in Wetzlar ) is a German virologist , professor of virology and head of the Institute of Virology at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Life

He studied pharmacy at the Philipps University of Marburg and received his doctorate in biochemistry in 1988 . During his postdoctoral studies and his work as an assistant professor, he researched Marburg and Ebola viruses and completed his habilitation with studies on the replication and transcription of the Marburg virus in 2000. In 2003 he was involved in the discovery of the SARS coronavirus . From 2006 and 2007 he headed a working group at the Center for Biosafety at the Robert Koch Institute . At the end of 2007 he was appointed Professor of Virology and Director of the Institute of Virology at the Philipps University of Marburg. There he heads a special research area on RNA viruses and a section of the German Center for Infection Research .

Scientific research focus

His main research interests are the molecular biology of arena and filoviruses as well as the development of new vaccine strategies against highly pathogenic pathogens. He is particularly interested in zoonotic viruses, which can cause serious diseases in humans. Together with Rino Rappuoli , Antonio Lanzavecchia and colleagues he developed a variant of the hybridoma technique using the Epstein-Barr virus for immortalization of B-cells .
