Stephanie Cook (born February 7, 1972 in Irvine , North Ayrshire , Scotland) is a former modern pentathlete and Olympic champion.

Career

When she was two, her parents moved with her from her Scottish home to Bedford . She attended Bedford High School , The Perse School for Girls , Peterhouse in Cambridge and finally Lincoln College in Oxford, where she studied medicine.

At Cambridge she was a rower, while studying medicine she turned to modern pentathlon. At the 1998 World Cup she won silver with the team and bronze with the relay.

After completing her studies, she concentrated fully on sport for two years. In 1999 she became vice world champion in the individual competition and world champion with the relay.

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, she won the first modern pentathlon for women in Olympic history, in which she had to catch up in the final cross-country run from eighth place 49 seconds and only took the lead 250 meters from the finish. In 2001 she won three titles at the World Championships in Millfield, Somerset and then ended her career.

Before she started her first permanent job at a hospital, she worked as a doctor in an earthquake region in Gujarat , India.

Awards

  • After her Olympic victory, she was awarded the title MBE at the turn of the year 2000 to 2001 .
  • In 2008 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bath .
