Kinnock speaks at the Labor Party conference (2016)

In March 2014, Kinnock was nominated by the Labor Party for the 2015 general election as a candidate for Aberavon constituency in Wales. In the election on May 7, 2015, he was elected to the House of Commons for the constituency of Aberavon with a majority of 10,445. In 2017, the re-election took place with a majority that rose to 16,761 votes, which corresponds to 68.1% of the votes.

Kinnock supported Owen Smith in 2016 in his (failed) attempt to replace Jeremy Corbyn as party chairman.

During the election campaign for the 2017 general election, he was one of four members of the House of Representatives who were critical of Jeremy Corbyn as Labor leader. The four MPs were accompanied by a team from the BBC in the context of a documentary (film title: Labor: The Summer that Changed Everything ). The documentary showed how Kinnock predicted a poor election result for Labor and his amazement at the gains.

Kinnock successfully defended the constituency in the 2019 general election . He supported Lisa Nandy's candidacy in the election for the party executive committee for 2020.

Private life

In 1996, Kinnock married Helle Thorning-Schmidt , who later became Prime Minister of Denmark. The couple met while studying at the College of Europe . They have two daughters.

In June 2010 the Danish tabloid accused BT Kinnock of tax evasion. At that time he paid his taxes in Switzerland. There was his place of work and his place of residence. On his wife's political website, however, it read "The family lives in Østerbro , Copenhagen". The couple had previously informed the media that Kinnock would spend the weekends in Denmark, occasionally until Tuesday. He sees Copenhagen as his place of residence and the center of his life and lives there with his family. According to the tabloid, Kinnock would have spent more than 183 days a year in Denmark and would therefore be taxable there.

Kinnock's wife, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, denied the allegations. However, she said the couple would ask the Danish tax authorities for a hearing. The hearing at the Danish tax authority SKAT was closed on September 17th, 2010. In the final report, SKAT stated that Kinnock was not taxable in Denmark from 2007 to 2009 because he was not domiciled in Denmark under Danish tax law.

Kinnock is an honorary member of the National Secular Society .

When his father was ennobled in 2005 and became "Baron Kinnock of Holyhead", Stephen Kinnock received the right to use the title The Honorable as the son of a baron . However, his father's title is not inheritable.
