Stephen Rea (/ ˈreɪ /; born October 31, 1946 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is an Irish actor .

Life

After a few years as an actor in Irish and English theaters and around two decades in more or less insignificant film roles, Stephen Rea became known overnight in 1992 as Fergus in Neil Jordan's The Crying Game , for which he was nominated for an Oscar in 1993 as best male leading actor .

He completed his acting training at the Abbey Theater School . In the 1970s and 1980s, he constantly commuted between theater, television and film. At the theater, Gabriel Byrne and Colm Meaney were among his colleagues. He made his film debut in 1970 in a tiny supporting role in the horror flick The Witches' Death Cry, starring Vincent Price . Neil Jordan gave him his first major role in 1980 in the film Angel , which is considered the prequel of The Crying Game . Rea and Jordan have now made twelve films together, the last being Greta (2018).

In 1995 he played a prominent role in Citizen X, a coroner in a twelve-year search for a serial killer in Russia in the 1980s. In 2001 Rea starred in the drama On the Edge . In 2003 he played the Leopold Bloom of James Joyce in Bloom . In the lavish comic adaptation V for Vendetta in 2006, he played one of the main roles as a police officer who was plagued by his conscience and worked for a dictatorial regime.

From 1983 to 2003, the Republican Protestant was married to former IRA fighter Dolours Price, with whom he has two sons.
