history
The start of brewing in Plauen
The first indications of a brewery in Plauen date back to the 13th century. The city's first brewery, the so-called Komturhof brewery , was built near the Johanniskirche and was first mentioned in a document in 1358. The great flood of water in 1834 completely destroyed this brewery.
Due to an increased demand for consumption in the 16th century, three more breweries were built. The dislike of Burgrave Heinrich VI shows that the Plauen beer was not the best at that time . against those who preferred "foreign suitable beer" or Rhine wine . There was the Herrenbrauhaus in Herrenstrasse, which was rebuilt next to the Malzhaus on the old pond after the great city fire in 1844 and was used as such until 1897. A third, the Marx-Fröbersgrüner-Brauhaus, was on the pot market and was demolished in 1863. The fourth, the Hammer Brewery, was in Neustadt.
Foundation of the Aktien-Brauverein
In 1838 there were 185 brewing rights in Plauen who had to cover the demand for beer for Plauen and the surrounding area (within the so-called beer mile ). If this failed, the city could sell beer from more distant cities, such as. B. Import farm.
In order to meet the constantly increasing demand for beer and to counteract the associated import of Bavarian and Hirschberg beer, a share brewery was founded on October 23, 1857 at the location of the Sternquell brewery in the Syratal, which still exists today . More than 200 homebrewers with brewing rights acted as founding members of the Aktienbrauverein.
The Sternquell brewery in the 20th century
At the beginning of the 20th century, the annual beer output increased continuously and reached 120,000 hl in 1910. In the years that followed, the political turmoil caused by the two world wars and the global economic crisis had to be struggled vigorously. In 1945 the brewery had to be completely closed.
After the end of the war, the company was nationalized under the Soviet occupation and renamed the Sternquell Brewery Plauen. In 1949 the first brew of Sternquell beer could be brewed.
The brewery experienced its heyday in the 1950s. First investments contributed to the quality improvement. The still known Sternquell Pils was born. The Sternquell brewery developed into the largest brewery in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in the following years .
In the course of reprivatisation in 1990, Sternquell-Brauerei GmbH was founded, which has been a subsidiary of Kulmbacher Brauerei AG since October 1990 . The Sternquell brand was able to establish itself in its sales areas of Saxony, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and southern Brandenburg.
Restructuring of the brewery
The Sternquell beer was brewed until August 2016 in Dobenaustraße in Plauen. In order to meet the requirements of modern logistics and to cope with the lack of space in the city center, new company premises were built in the neighboring community of Neuensalz on the federal highway 72 . There are today u. a. the bottling plant, the brewhouse and the dispatch center. The administration remained at the old location in Plauen.
Almost half a million hectoliters of beer are now brewed in the brewery every year. The production focus is traditionally in the Pils area.
Brewing pride
In 2013, the bottling of the Chemnitz beer brand Braustolz was relocated to Plauen. This was still brewed in Chemnitz. The brewery in Chemnitz was closed in 2017 and the brand has been brewed at Sternquell in Plauen ever since. Both companies merged.
Awards
The Sternquell brewery was able to win 30 times the “Golden Prize” and 19 times the “Silver Prize” of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) for various beers (as of January 20, 2009). This makes it the first East German brewery to be awarded the “Prize of the Best in Gold” for the third time in a row for 15 years of uninterrupted DLG awards. In addition, the brewery was the only one in Saxony to be awarded the “Honorary Prize of the Minister for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection”.
