Stevan Edward "Steve" Pearce (born August 24, 1947 in Lamesa , Texas ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). From 2011 to 2019, as between 2003 and 2009, he represented the second constituency of the state of New Mexico in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Steve Pearce studied at New Mexico State University until 1970 and then at Eastern New Mexico University . Between 1970 and 1976 he served as a pilot in the US Air Force . He was used in the Vietnam War. He then worked in the oil industry with his wife, Cynthia. The couple own a company that sells supplies for oil fields.

Political rise

Between 1997 and 2000, Pearce was an MP in the New Mexico House of Representatives . In 2000 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . In the 2002 congressional elections, he was elected to succeed Joe Skeen in the US House of Representatives. After he was re-elected in 2004 and 2006, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress between January 3, 2003 and January 3, 2009 . There he was a member of the finance committee and the committee that dealt with the mineral resources.

In 2005, he briefly made negative headlines when it was discovered that some of the articles published under his name were plagiarism. As a result, his press officer had to resign. In 2008 he no longer ran for the House of Representatives. Instead, he reapplied for a seat in the US Senate. But he was defeated by the Democrat Tom Udall with 39:61 percent of the vote . In 2010 he ran again for his old seat in the House of Representatives, which he was able to win back for the Republicans. After two re-elections in 2014 and 2016, he was able to exercise his office until the 2018 election. In 2018 he ran against the Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham for the governorship of New Mexico and accordingly decided not to run again for his seat in the House of Representatives, but failed with 42.8 percent of the votes. Lujan Grisham achieved 57.2 percent. The Democrat Xochitl Torres Small won his old seat in the House of Representatives.

Since December 2018 he has been chairman of the state organization of the Republicans in New Mexico.
