Michelle Lynn Lujan Grisham (* 24. October 1959 in Los Alamos , New Mexico as Michelle Lynn Lujan ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party , and since January 1, 2019 Governor of New Mexico. She is the first female Democratic governor of Latin American descent in the United States. She had previously been a member of the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Michelle Lujan, her maiden name, is the niece of former US Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan , who was also a congressman for New Mexico. Her cousin, Ben R. Luján , represents New Mexico's third congressional electoral district. She graduated from St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe . After completing a law degree at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and being admitted to the bar in 1987, she began working in this profession. She became a member of her state's bar association. From 1991 to 2002 she was a member of the New Mexico Aging Commission. Between 2002 and 2004, she worked for the Secretary of Aging and Long-term Services . From 2004 to 2007 she was Secretary of Health of New Mexico. Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . In 2008 she unsuccessfully sought her party's nomination for that year's congressional elections. From 2010 to 2012 she was a member of the Bernalillo County District Council .

In the congressional elections of 2012, Michelle Lujan Grisham was in the first constituency of New Mexico in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC voted where they succeed on January 3, 2013 Martin Heinrich took that in the US Senate was elected. In this election she beat her Republican opponent Janice Arnold-Jones with 59:41 percent of the vote. After two re-elections in 2014 and 2016, she was able to hold this office until the beginning of 2019. In 2018, she decided not to run again and instead applied for the office of governor in New Mexico. After a successful primary , she won the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018 as a Democratic candidate against the Republican Steve Pearce with more than 57% of the vote. She took up her new office on January 1, 2019. Lujan Grisham replaced the Republican Susana Martinez , who could not run again after two terms. She is the second woman to hold this post after Martinez.

Michelle Lujan Grisham was married to Gregory Grisham, who died in 2004, with whom she has two daughters.
