Raymond S. "Jerry" Apodaca (born October 3, 1934 in Las Cruces , New Mexico ) is a former American politician . He was governor of the state of New Mexico from 1975 to 1979 .

Career

Jerry Apodaca graduated from the University of New Mexico . Then he ran his own insurance agency. As a member of the Democratic Party , he was elected to the New Mexico Senate in 1965 for four terms . He remained a member of this body until 1974.

In 1974 he was elected the new governor of his state. The main focus of his four-year term of office was the reform of the government apparatus. His government consisted of twelve ministries. Some committees have been merged or abolished entirely. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter appointed him chairman of a presidential team of advisors on physical fitness.

After the end of his tenure, he published a number of publications and magazines aimed primarily at Americans with Spanish origins. Apocada was also a member of the US Navy Reserve . Between 1985 and 1991 he was also on the board of directors of the University of New Mexico. Jerry Apodaca has five children with his wife Clara.
