Steve Slagle

Steve Slagle (born September 18, 1951 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz musician ( saxophone , flute ).

Slagle attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he played with fellow students such as John Scofield , Harvie Swartz , Joey Baron and Joe Lovano , and with Stevie Wonder's band. In 1976 he went to New York, where he worked with Bobby Paunetto (heard in "Little Rico's Theme"), Machito and the Afro-Cuban Orchestra , and performed with Lionel Hampton , Woody Herman and Cab Calloway .

In 1977 he played with the Steve Kuhn Quartet, with whom he also went on a European tour. After performing with the organist Jack McDuff , he became a member of the Carla Bley Band in 1981 ; he also performed with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra .

After recording with Milton Nascimento in Rio de Janeiro, he became musical director of Ray Barretto's band and then arranger and saxophonist of the Mingus Big Band , with which he recorded two Grammy- nominated albums. After that he was a member of various bands of Joe Lovano. The album 52nd Street Themes ( Blue Note Records ) produced here was awarded a Grammy. Since 1983 Slagle released a number of albums as a band leader; from the 2000s he led The Stryker / Slagle Band with Dave Stryker . He also worked with musicians such as Joe Lovano , Olivier Hutman , Harry Miller and Gerald Cannon , in the Netherlands in 2007 with the Het Brabants Jazz Orkest / and Paul van Kemenade . In 2015 he presented the joint album The Power of Two with Bill O'Connell . In 2017 he recorded the album Dedication under his own name , on which Lawrence Fields , Dave Stryker, Scott Colley and Bill Stewart participated. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 76 recording sessions between 1976 and 2018, according to Tom Lord .

He teaches at the Manhattan School of Music and runs his own label, Slagle Records .
