Eugene "Gene" Jackson junior , also Action Jackson , (born October 16, 1961 in West Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz drummer.

Live and act

From 1979 to 1984 he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston . There he met Kevin Eubanks , with whom he worked for the next few years. In 1987 he moved to New York City . From 1991 to 2000 he was a member of the various bands Herbie Hancocks . He was also active in Michele Rosewoman's Quintessence , Robin Eubanks ' Mental Images Group , Jorge Sylvester's Music Collage and The Mingus Big Band .

Since 1999 Jackson has also worked with the NDR Big Band (among others under Peter Herborn ) and the German tenor saxophonist Christof Lauer . In the 2000s he performed mainly in Europe: with the Mingus Big Band in Germany, Switzerland and France, with the Orrin Evans Trio in Italy, Spain and Malta, with Claudia Acuña in Finland, with Antonio Faraò in Italy, the Switzerland and Germany and with Stafford James in Austria, Belgium and Germany. In 2002 he played a. a. Recordings with soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome , trombonist Conrad Herwig , trumpeter Alex Sipiagin , tenor saxophonist JD Allen III and pianist Orrin Evans.

In addition, Jackson worked over the years with musicians such as Dianne Reeves , Christian McBride , Hugh Masekela , Cyrus Chestnut , Greg Osby , Terence Blanchard , Andrew Hill , George Coleman , Steve Turré , Chico Freeman , Von Freeman , Don Patterson , Elvis Costello , Art Farmer , Mark Ledford , James Williams , Carla Cook , Craig Harris , Dave Kakowski , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Claudio Roditi , Donald Brown , Joe Lovano , Billy Childs , Joe Locke , Craig Handy , Anthony Cox , Lonnie Plaxico and Steve Slagle . Currently (2018) he plays in the New York Standards Quartet with Tim Armacost , David Berkman and Ugonna Okegwo .

Jackson teaches at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York City. a. Courses at Eastman University in Rochester , the Musikhochschule in Hamburg and the Folkwangschule in Essen .
