The Foundation for the Sorbian People ( Sorbian Załožba za serbski lud ? / I ) supports the preservation and development, promotion and dissemination of the Sorbian language , culture and traditions as an expression of the Sorbian identity as a joint instrument of the federal government and the two states of Brandenburg and Saxony People . Structure and history

The foundation is based in the house of the Sorbs in Bautzen and maintains a branch in Cottbus and regional offices in Crostwitz , Hoyerswerda and Runde . As a foundation , it represents the financial basis of the Sorbian institutional landscape. It was founded on October 19, 1991 in the Evangelical Church of Lohsa .

The federal government supports the foundation on the basis of a financing agreement with Brandenburg and Saxony. The total funding amounts to around € 18.6 million per year from 2016. The sponsored institutions include the Sorbian National Ensemble , the Domowina with the Witaj Language Center , the Domowina Publishing House , the Sorbian Institute , the German-Sorbian People's Theater , the Wendish Museum and the School for Lower Sorbian Language and Culture.

The foundation director was Marko Suchy from 1992 to 2015 ; From December 21, 2015, Michaela Moosche managed the foundation's business. On April 12, 2016, Jan Budar was elected as the new director of the foundation. He took office on October 1, 2016.

Board of Trustees

The determining body of the foundation is the foundation council, which consists of 15 members, including six Sorbian representatives (four from Saxony and two from Brandenburg). Susann Schenk has been Chair of the Board of Trustees since November 22, 2016 .

Ćišinski Prize

As a rule, the foundation awards the Ćišinski Prize, named after the Sorbian poet Jakub Bart-Ćišinski , every two years as the main and promotional prize. It is awarded for outstanding achievements in the field of Sorbian culture, art and science or for promising beginnings in these areas. The main prize is endowed with € 7,500, the advancement award with € 2,500.
