Alexander Ahrens (born January 19, 1966 in West Berlin ) is a German lawyer , sinologist and local politician of the SPD (non-party until March 2017). He has been the Lord Mayor of Bautzen since August 21, 2015 .

Life

Ahrens studied Sinology in Berlin from 1985 to 1990 , which was followed by a degree in law . He finished this with the second state examination in law . He then went to Hong Kong and Shanghai to work as a corporate lawyer for large German industrial companies. After 2002, he completed his training as a specialist tax lawyer in Germany . At the same time, from 2000 he was established as an independent lawyer and partner in a business and tax law firm in Berlin. From 2007 to 2012 Ahrens was an independent financial planner at MLP AG in Berlin. In 2008 he changed his place of residence and has since been registered with his first place of residence in Bautzen.

Ahrens is married to a police officer, has four children and is a hunter .

From 1992 to 2001 he was a member of the SPD. In 2017 he rejoined the SPD.

Mayoral election 2015

For the mayoral election in 2015 it was set up by the parties represented in the city council, DIE LINKE, Bürgerbündnis Bautzen (BBBz) and the SPD. After he had already achieved the best result in the first ballot, he prevailed in the second round with 48.1% of the votes against the CDU candidate Matthias Knaak (35.3%) and succeeded the long-time mayor Christian Schramm .

Candidate for the SPD party chairmanship

After the resignation of party leader Andrea Nahles, the mayor of Flensburg, Simone Lange, announced at the beginning of August 2019 that she wanted to run for chairmanship of the SPD together with Ahrens . Ahrens said: "It is now all the more important to take responsibility for our party from these communities, to renew it and to put the urgent and important issues of our time on the agenda." On September 4, 2019, the applicant duo declared their withdrawal in favor of the competitors Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans .

Board membership

Ahrens has been a member of the BBB (Beteiligungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft Bautzen) supervisory board since 2014. Since April 2016, he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Sorbian People as a representative of the Saxon City and Municipal Council .

In May 2019 he was elected to the Bautzen district council on the SPD list.
