Radiation protection officer

In Germany, a radiation protection officer (also SSB ) leads and oversees activities to ensure radiation protection when handling radioactive substances or ionizing radiation. Its tasks are described in § 43 of the Radiation Protection Ordinance StrlSchV.

The tasks of a radiation protection officer include:

  • Planning and definition of technical and organizational radiation protection measures
  • Functional check of the devices, facilities etc. intended for radiation protection
  • Review of the effectiveness of the protective devices and protective regulations
  • Instruction of the people working in radiation protection areas (e.g. access controls, protective clothing)
  • Annual training of the staff

Radiation protection officers must have the necessary specialist knowledge according to Section 47 StrlSchV, which can be acquired through training and practical experience suitable for the respective area of ​​application. Successful participation in a recognized radiation protection course is an additional requirement for the appointment of a person as radiation protection officer. Even after appointment as a radiation protection officer, the specialist knowledge must be refreshed every five years by successfully participating in officially recognized courses. Otherwise there will be a loss of specialist knowledge. In order to regain the specialist knowledge, z. B. in veterinary medicine a course of at least 24 hours of 45 minutes can be completed.

The radiation protection officer is appointed in writing by the radiation protection officer who, unlike the radiation protection officer, does not need to have any specialist knowledge. He must not be hindered in his work and not disadvantaged because of the fulfillment of his duties as a radiation protection officer. There is an obligation to inform the radiation protection officer about technical and organizational measures that affect his tasks and powers. The position of a radiation protection officer is regulated in detail in § 43 StrlSchV and § 70 StrlSchG .
