The Stralsund illuminated manuscript is a culturally significant, almost complete representation of the cities of an entire territory with many credible details in a special artistic quality.

history

The exact history of the creation of the picture collection is not known. Between 1610 and 1618 the Rostock scholar Eilhard Lubinus prepared the first complete map of the Duchy of Pomerania . This map also included the views of all Pomeranian cities. Duke Philip II had commissioned the Antwerp painter Johann Wolfhart (Johan Wolfart) for his part of Pomerania- Szczecin, which largely corresponded to Western Pomerania (Pomeraniae ulterioris) . For Pommern-Wolgast, roughly equivalent to Western Pomerania (Pomeraniae citerioris) , where Duke Philipp Julius ruled, an artist who remained unknown was commissioned by him.

The vedute is a pen and ink drawing in watercolors . The drawings have high points of view, in some cases elevated positions were chosen for the comprehensive illustrations. The images were clearly staggered according to foreground, middle ground and depth. The width of the cities was emphasized. The representations were preferably carried out starting from a water side. The illustrations show a remarkable level of detail for their time of creation. The coloring makes it possible to recognize different roof structures. The immediate vicinity of the cities was also recorded.

Wolfhart's city views and probably most of the pictures by the unknown painter served as a template for the copperplate engravings on the edge of the Lubin map . This means that the time of creation for most of the pictures can be narrowed down to the years 1611 to 1615, from the beginning of the work of Eilhard Lubinus to its completion. However, some pictures, such as the depiction of Loitz , where the nave was enlarged around 1600, are probably older or based on older models.

The pictures came into the Stralsund city archive and were integrated under the title "Civitates Pomeranie citerioris". They are filed in the collection “People, Maps, Plans, Views of Places and Buildings” under the signature E IIa-40. The Stralsund Illuminated Manuscript was first published in 1979 as a facsimile by historian Herbert Ewe at Hinstorff Verlag Rostock.

At the time of its publication in 1979, the Stralsund Illuminated Manuscript contained the oldest known photographic evidence for most of the West Pomeranian cities before the Thirty Years War . Only for Stralsund ( Sebastian Münster : Cosmographia , 1592) and Barth ( Georg Braun : Civitates Orbis Terrarum , 1598) have older representations been preserved. For the smaller towns in Western Pomerania, the drawings in the illuminated manuscript remained the only reliable historical illustration until the 19th century.

At the time of publication and afterwards, further pen drawings of Western Pomeranian cities were found in the Stralsund city archive. These were published in 1996 by Herbert Ewe and are also stored in the above collection.
