Strečno (Hungarian Sztrecsény - until 1902 Sztrecsnó - older also Sztrecsén ) is a municipality located about 7 km southeast of the city of Žilina .

Here the river Waag ( Vah ) breaks through the Little Fatra ( Malá Fatra ).
history
The place was first mentioned around 1300. During this time the castle was built by Matthäus Csák , which was destroyed in 1698.
tourism
Strečno is lined with mountains and is a tourist destination, as the Strečno castle and another castle ruin fit into the river valley in a very picturesque and romantic way . The previously calm river Waag impresses here with its rapids, which makes raft trips possible.

The place has a train station, which is served by the Slovak State Railways (ŽSR). From nearby Vrútky there are also Regiojets in the direction of Prague, which cross the town.
