The Super Bowl XVIII was the 18th Super Bowl , the final game of the 1983 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 22, 1984, the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Raiders faced each other at Tampa Stadium in Tampa , Florida . The winners were the Los Angeles Raiders with a final score of 38: 9, which was the largest point difference in a Super Bowl to date. Los Angeles' running back Marcus Allen , who carried the ball 20 times in 191 yards and two touchdowns , was named Super Bowl MVP . The Redskins were previously strongly favored, as they took first place within the league with a balance of 14: 2, the best running defense as well as the offense .

Course of the game

In the first quarter of the game, the Raiders took the lead with a touchdown on a punt block , followed by a twelve-yard touchdown pass by Jim Plunkett to Cliff Branch in the second , followed by a field goal for the Redskins. An interception converted into a touchdown then brought the Raiders the intermediate result of 21: 3 at half time. The second half began with a touchdown by the Redskins, followed by two more touchdowns and a field goal by the Raiders, which resulted in the final score of 38: 9.
